Nemeth and Katranji Periodontics

Positive experience: I was in for my regular visit with Colleen, she has always been very professional and just a nice person. I have been seeing Dr Nemeth for years and he has always explained each procedure that was needed. Excellent staff and services!!!

Negative experience: Beware of the glowing reviews!!! If they sound to good to be true,, well, you know the rest. I was examined and quoted a price of $10,000 for a relatively simple and common crown lengthening procedure and the need for expensive and painful laser treatments to “save” my teeth and gums, I was told that without these laser treatments, I was at a much higher risk of having a heart attack, developing cancer, a stroke, dementia and just about every other disease known to mankind. Red flag alert! With many family members and friends in the medical field, I was urged to solicit other medical opinions. I was subsequently examined by two other dentists plus a different periodontal specialist. When I mentioned this dentists proposed treatment plan and prices, the other dentists shook their heads in disbelief. As other reviewers have mentioned, the scare tactics used in this practice are alarming. When I went back to the office after my initial exam to obtain my treatment outline and pricing, I felt like they were trying to sell me a time share in Siberia. The bottom line is I don’t require laser treatments for my gums as I was told. I just need to continue with my regular professional cleanings and checkups. My crown lengthening procedure will be completed by a different and very reputable periodontal specialist affiliated with a very large university who has over 30 years experience for only $850.00. Shop around and don’t fall for the doom and gloom sales brochures and bacterial microscopic displays on their 50 inch TV’s.

Fantastic experience: I experienced a root canal failure on my number eight front tooth. The dental team was able to quickly schedule me for a solution that was more permanent.

For 22 months I had brain fog with one day feeling not so bad to other days felt I was dying. With so many different doctor appointments, catscans, xrays, allergy specialist, ENT specialist, blood work, pills, heart monitor, no doctors could find what was wrong. Fantastic experience: I had a wonderful visit with Tamara. I was introduced to a new mouthwash and I've been using it for three months ago and everything is squeaky clean.

Positive experience: I like the videos that Dr. Nemeth posts in youtube alllowing him to reach a wider client base while showing his expertise. Unfortunately, his staff informed me that they do not allow virtual visits for initial consultation for out of town patients. This limits his reach overall, as it is going to be hard to plan for a gingivectomy when a paid virtual visit is not even offered for clients willing to pay a virtual consult and get help with coordination of care as a potential out of town patient. I thought it was unusual as plastic surgeons routinely offer paid virtual visits for out of town patients. If I do have a longer visit in Michigan in the future maybe I'll try and set up an appointment then. Thank you for sharing your expertise online Dr. Nemeth.

Positive experience: Most of my experiences with this office have been great. My teeth are getting stronger and for now I don't need teeth removed. My concerns however are the requirements following my procedure. I have been told to take antibiotics monthly for 1 year and the use of flouride is highly recommended. When questioning the possibility of antibiotic resistance or flouride toxicity, my hygienist says she knows nothing of the subject and deflects by saying this is what dr Nemeth wants. It's troubling that these very real concerns are discarded as though I'm out of line for even asking. If I build a resistance to antibiotics, they won't work when I really need them. Flouride toxicity can cause an array of issues, from nerve damage, cancer, or heart damage. I'm not a doctor but I'd like reassurance I'm not setting myself up for potential life threatening illness just so my dentist can say my procedure was successful. I'm very disappointed at the moment.

Negative experience: I was disappointed when I called after business hours today to be specific regarding continuous bleeding after a procedure and the office was unable to reach the doctor. I was instructed by an office member per the office manager, if I could not stop the bleeding myself to go to emergency. Go to emergency for the bleeding in the upper roof of my mouth….What? Really and wow!!

Dr. Nemeth was very kind and thourough with my exam and explaination of what was going on and how he would treat the areas so my gums would be healthy again. I also met with Beth afterwards for my treatment plan and costs, and she was just as kind and thorough in her explaination of everything.

Fantastic experience: I highly recommend Dr. Katranji, not only for his skillset but bedside manner. I had two surgeries, a bone graph and gum graph. Although no one looks forwards to these types of surgeries (they are scary), Dr. Katranji was the best doctor for the job. He was very thorough in explaining the process and I never felt rushed or that my questions and concerns were silly or dramatic. He is caring, knowledgeable, and honest. Dr. Katranji doesn’t sugarcoat the truth so you’re fully aware of what to expect, but his delivery couldn’t be more gentle when spoken with a kind heart. He’s very down to earth and I felt comfortable from the first consultation. Surgery days and follow up appointments were just as positive. The office staff is probably the nicest staff of any doctor offices. A doctor can be great but if the staff is a nightmare to work with, it’s a deal breaker. They also run on time with their appointments! The Assistants in the office taking X-rays, surgical prep, are also fantastic. I highly recommend all aspects of this office, you won’t be disappointed!

Fantastic experience: I visited this clinic for treatment and I found them to be the epitome of ethics, good treatment and welcoming of their visitors. After spending about an hour with them, they performed the required treatment and it turned out that the causes of the disease I was suffering from were not within their specialty. They advised me after consulting an ear, nose and throat doctor before saying goodbye, wishing me a speedy recovery.

Fantastic experience: The thought of having LANAP was of interest when I saw some of Dr. Nemeth’s videos on YouTube. Seeing the gum steam was insightful. More than willing to work me financially which helped me to know when I would have the procedure completed. Great staff and everyone is supportive and education given every step of the way. For anyone considering LANAP, note you will have a special diet for a short time afterwards. Consider trying your diet beforehand so you will be able to test textures as that is more available than your taste buds for the days following. Remember to drink a lot of fluids as that will also contribute to your comfort. My teeth feel more secure as before they were more lose feeling which was confirmed during my pre-procedure review. More confidence with biting into an apple and on nuts, which happens later on.

Negative experience: You’ve probably Googled the “pinhole” procedure and are considering paying thousands of dollars out-of-pocket because you hope for a less invasive gum graft with a quicker recovery. This is not that. My surgery with Dr. Nemeth was the most traumatic medical experience of my life. Since Dr. Nemeth asked me for this review less than 24 hours after my surgery (and after every subsequent follow-up appointment), I assume he wants his patients’ experiences to be known. I hope my story helps at least one prospective patient re-evaluate their options. If you’re considering the pinhole procedure with Dr. Nemeth, expect to be charged approximately $2k per tooth and coerced to do more teeth than you were referred for. (I was referred by my orthodontist for receding gums on 2 teeth following Invisalign. Dr. Nemeth recommended 6 and said I just needed to "open my wallet.") On the day of surgery, I was invited to pay and ushered back with little discussion. With the exception of Sue T. who was kind at every turn, I sensed an immediate "rushed" vibe. Questions were discouraged (the assistant said the time for questions had passed when I had my pre-op appointment, 3 months before the surgery). The next red flag was when several staff members were incapable of drawing my blood for the “platelet rich plasma” they said I needed to help heal. After brutalizing my veins, they turned the task over to Dr. Nemeth, who decided we would forego it altogether, saying it was probably useless anyway. I assumed Dr. Nemeth was looking to take blood from a different vein, but I realized too late that he was instead starting an IV of anesthesia/amnesia drugs to end our discussion and shut me up. As I sat up to question what was happening, the assistant pushed me back into a lying position and said “we’ve been doing this for 40 years” and that was that. The last thing I heard before I slipped into unconsciousness was Dr. Nemeth saying was “well, that’s weird.” I woke up in my bed at home 4 hours later. I later learned that my gums had been sliced away from the bone, packed with donor tissue, stretched back over the teeth and sewn with stitches in a figure eight pattern around my lower teeth and lip, with knots poking out of my lip. In the weeks after surgery, I followed doctor's orders, went to my follow ups, and used the prescribed mouthwash that turned my teeth brown. It was at my second follow up that Dr. Nemeth told me I would need another procedure called a vestibuloplasty to correct the first procedure and “release” my lip from my lower gum line. He would make some laser cuts, more stitches. He said this happens all the time. If it was expected that this could (and probably would) happen, why had no one told me before? I also voiced concern about the continued numbness in my lower lip and chin. I have since seen my dentist, another periodontist, and a neurologist who asked me why I was not treated or referred when it was evident in the days after surgery that sensation was not returning - they said that the ability to repair nerve damage is much greater when you act immediately. Dr. Nemeth did not seem surprised that nerve damage had occurred as a result of his work and yet this was not something I was told was LIKELY to happen, nor was I provided with treatment to increase my chances of recovery. Today, the nerve damage is considered likely permanent, as more than 6 months have passed since the compression/stretch injury. I have excessive scar tissue in my mouth where my gums were stretched and sewn. As for the vestibuloplasty, my new periodontist agrees it is needed but both she and my neurologist say that doing this would further compromise the damaged nerves and is not recommended for that reason. Also, the gum recession has returned almost to where it was before, and the teeth were not stabilized as intended. My dentist and periodontist say I will likely need a traditional gum graft using tissue from the roof of my mouth - the very procedure I was hoping to avoid by going to Dr. Nemeth. UPDATE: 1 year post-op, still numb.

Fantastic experience: Tamara does a great on my teeth, and is always friendly and upbeat. I just wish there was less pain involved when I go. I dread going every time.

Fantastic experience: I would highly recommend Dr Nemeth's periodontal practice. The staff is warm, yet professional, and the Dr is genius. It's an hour drive for me through traffic but I wouldn't be treated by anyone else. My mouth is the healthiest its been in years.

Fantastic experience: I flew back from Florida in order to have Dr. Katranji treat my failing implants. He, Esther and other staff spent 4 hours working to save them 4 days ago. No other periodontist in my experience would have had the advanced training, tools and patience to attempt this task. Negative experience: I wish I could leave good feedback at this time, but this laser treatment has been one of the most painful experiences I've ever gone through. It is almost a month since I had this done and I'm still experiencing pain, bleeding and a ringing in my ears. You would think after paying over $8,000 that Dr. Nemeth would have slipped in for a couple of minutes during my checkup to see how I was doing, but no. Additionally, every time I eat, food is getting stuck between my teeth. Only time will tell if this was all worth it! I will give a follow up review several months down the road.

Fantastic experience: The staff were all nice and professional in their work. It was my first time going to that state but they made the journey easy and stress free for me. They provided a great driver who picked me up from the airport, to the hotel and from there to my appointments and then back to the airport for my flight. I was tested negative for the procedure I went for so that’s why I didn’t stay long. I met Dr Nemeth personally and he was a nice man who knows his job. A big thanks to all the staff especially Beth for being kind to a total stranger like me, I know is part of your duty but you are sincere.

Fantastic experience: I had the breath treatment. Everyone was fantastic. The staff was so kind and compassionate. The treatment mainly focuses on cleaning build up off the tongue and getting you to ground zero. They kept checking in with me during the cleaning and I even directed them a little and asked them to go back over a small area which they were happy to do. This is as far as it goes, they don’t tell you what I am about to say this is just my advice - you have to maintain the hygiene of your tongue after the procedure. My breath got better and better bc I followed the aftercare instructions. After care is definitely an important part. That means cleaning your tongue as directed and using that mouth wash. That mouth wash is phenomenal and after 3-4 week of daily use it will 100% rid your mouth of any areas you feel may be problematic after the procedure. If you get it done and you still feel like you have a little bit of a bad taste in the back of your mouth, just use the mouthwash and use it multiple times a day. Also get a little travel size spray bottle and spray it in the back of your throat, I found that very very helpful. I also used a throat probiotic and I found that very helpful too , lastly and most important, make sure you are hydrated and drink lots of water - not being properly hydrated was a large contributing factor for me. End of the day I thought the procedure was a success and I’d definitely recommend them and I’d definitely go back. The staff was the best I can’t say that enough!

Negative experience: My gum-line is 1/4" lower after this treatment, moreover, he recommends to use regular, industrial grade, bleach in the water-pick!!!! I made egregious mistake trusting their aggressive advertisements. 12k plus three trips from another state for 45min "treatment" under complete anesthesia. Beware!!!!!

Fantastic experience: My experience is always pleasant at this dental office. Upon entering patients are greeted with a warm smile at the front desk by staff. The environment is always clean and well organized. This office provides water, tea, and coffee for patients. The doctors have a wealth of knowledge regarding dental care and practices, and are friendly and professional. Tamara, is my dental hygienist. She is absolutely amazing, friendly, professional, and displays ethical practices. She educates her patients on dental hygiene care. Tamara, is also funny!!! :-)

Negative experience: The experience was unbearable. After the LANAP procedure I was deathly nauseated. I had to go through emergency to receive two bags of electrolytes. With 4 tubes of blood drawn. The nausea meds they gave me in the emergency room did not last . I asked the doctor’s office to give me something for nausea and they would not. The bleach diluted with water caused me even more discomfort. If I knew about the after care I would not have had the LANAP procedure. But the staff’s bedside manners were good.

Fantastic experience: Great experience! Dr. K was so wonderful in answering my questions! The tooth pull hardly hurt at all and required almost zero pain meds after! Couldn’t ask for a better outcome.

Fantastic experience: I normally don't write reviews, but I feel like this team deserves one. I received the LANAP surgery few weeks ago, because of my gum disease. The team was exceptional! I'm still in the healing process, waiting for my gums and bones to grow back so I'll update this review in about a year. However, up to this point, I can't complain. No more tartar, plaque or gum disease! The staff including Dr. Nemeth were great, especially Dr. Colleen, she was like a mother to me. The service is the best I've ever gotten from any service industry! The first dentist I went to in my home town wanted to extract atleast 6 teeth and I couldn't have that. So, I ended up traveling a long way to see the team known for saving teeth and it was worth it!. Thank you Dr. Nemeth and staff for keeping my teeth and sanity intact. Looking forward to the next visit!

Positive experience: The entire staff is quite knowledgeable and is extremely friendly. Everyone is willing to thoroughly and patiently answer questions. I will say that I was quite taken aback by the cost of the LANAP surgery; especially in conjunction with extraction/implant cost.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Nemeth is one of the best periodontists in the country; he has a Youtube channel with very helpful content for all things oral health related. He’s a leader in a lot of cutting edge periodontics procedures like the pinhole technique and LANAP. His expertise is impressive, as well as the staff.

Negative experience: I needed something done to my receding gums before I started losing my front teeth. I saw 3 different highly rated periodontists. My choices included gum tissue grafting and the pin hole surgery procedure. I chose Dr. Nemeth and pin hole surgery. Although my out-of-pocket costs would be a little higher than with the other two highly rated periodontists, I chose Dr Nemeth because of the thoroughness of his examination, his explanation of the process and the recovery period. My surgery was yesterday so it is too soon to evaluate pin hole surgery as a choice. However I can say that Dr. Nemeth and his entire staff without a doubt exceeded my expectations. I will not hesitate to recommend Dr Nemeth and his staff to friends and relatives. 8/6/2024 Update: My choice of the pin hole surgery turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life. It has done NOTHING to improve my receding front gum line. When I questioned the procedure, I was told by Nemeth that it worked but I just couldn’t tell it visually. This was a complete failure and a waste of $11,000 out-of-pocket that this 80 year old couldn’t afford to lose… My suggestion is to keep looking.
