Fantastic experience: As always, an extremely professional and personable visit, ably conducted by the caring and talented dental assistant Addie and attended by Dr. Schaefer. Today was step one for a crown to stop a cavity forming around an old amalgam. The procedure was quick and painless. Hard work is paying off, and it’s wonderful to be supported by such great health professionals.

Fantastic experience: Everyone dreads going to the dentist but my trip today included a massage chair! Laura is the best. Puts you at ease - very friendly- wouldn’t want a cleaning every day but if I had to I would definitely want Laura as my hygienist.

Negative experience: Normally I do not like posting any negative reviews regarding an experience especially since I thought this place was going to be great until dealing with the billing department and lies. (If you do not know how much insurance is going to cover, you should not give out inaccurate estimates!) Dr. Schaefer gave me an amount on a crown, each I agreed upon, however, I was hit with a large bill months later and when I contacted the "Billing" office, I was greeted by a receptionist over the phone that couldn't help me with the bill information. I waited over four days to get a call back from Billing just to be told by the billing person that "They cannot help what Dr. Schaefer told me or her dental hygienist because she is the one who made the price up for me, and I could discuss with her on the next appointment about it." Which I think is completely ridiculous. I shouldn't have to deal with the billing department. The staff should have a good amount knowledge of what I am going to pay before I proceed with the operation. So if you like being surprised with a bill or just straight up lied to by the dentist, come to Renken Dental in Springfield IL! Unprofessional behavior on both the dentist and the billing department. I will not be coming back again.

Fantastic experience: This was a great experience that surpassed my expectations. The pace was excellent. I never felt rushed, all my questions plus questions that I hadn’t even thought to initially ask were all fully answered. And they REALLY listened to what I had to say. Conversations were never one-sided. From the start it was clear a partnership was being formed. The only downside was that it took me so long to find this dental office! I’m so happy I finally did.

Negative experience: Twice now they told me I was paid in full and then came back for more money. The first time it was $250. This time I paid the $175 for a replacement crown (I have insurance that paid the rest), they told me I was paid in full and wouldn’t owe anything when they put in my permanent…and then came after me for $11…ELEVEN DOLLARS. ALWAYS trying to upsell; NEVER answer the phone, ALWAYS pushing for services you don’t need. Be warned. And, PS, the issue is not that insurance is complicated, the issue is that Renken reaches in your pocket on the way out the door, says you’re paid in full, and then comes back and says, “Oopsie! You owe more!”

Fantastic experience: Every contact with Renken Dentistry has been very positive. The staff are very knowledgeable , courteous, and informative. They keep you informed of every step in the procedure and your comfort is paramount while undergoing the treatment.

I was in the waiting room less than 10 min after checking in for my apt. My dentist, Dr Schaefer, is the best dentist Iv’e ever been too…hands down.

Fantastic experience: My regular dental hygienist is Stacey. She is incredibly personable. At my recent visit, she recommended the product Brushee for my new Invisalign trays to make things easier when I’m on the go. She also recommended Zima Dental Ultrasonic cleaner for when I’m home. All items are available on Amazon!

Fantastic experience: Today was my son Christian's first visit. He was really afraid but, the hygienist and Dr Schaefer were absolutely amazing with him. We have found a home dentist!

Negative experience: This place feels like it’s fine with scamming, misleading and exploiting people. When I made my appointment, I gave them my insurance information and was told I was covered. I showed up that day, entered in my insurance information again, and they showed me my quote at the end of the appointment - including the total amount my insurance covers, that my entire visit was covered and I owed $0. Fast forward to 3 months later, I get an email saying I owe the full $300+ because my insurance declined their claim but they’d “honor the discount offered at the time and only charge me $99.” I pushed back on this and was met with a rude, unhelpful woman named Jennifer. She insisted it was right but wouldn’t answer any of my questions, such as how they ran my insurance day-of and quoted me $0 the day of. I called my insurance and they verified that Renken never submitted a claim (confirming that a denied claim WOULD show in my record history). It was only when I told this to Renken and provided my case number that they said they’d “submit another claim.” They said that was the last time they would and if it was denied again, I’d “be responsible for the full amount or $99.” A couple of months after that, I receive a bill from them that I owe $73 for an appointment date I wasn’t there for (a federal holiday no less, were they even open?). I replied back and asked about it, and they said they “verified it’s correct” (something similar they told me the last time but clearly they didn’t). I called my insurance company and they said the dentist I saw was not in network and was never in network, which is why my insurance will only cover part of it. I’m not sure if the original dentist I booked took my insurance and they passed me off to a different one without considering my insurance, or what. No one has been able to answer my questions about why I was told my insurance covered their office when booking or how they ran it a second time day-of and found my quote to be $0. The entire situation feels either fraudulent or reflects a lot of incompetence. Either way, I wouldn’t recommend trusting them with your health or your wallet to my worst enemy. If you’re reading this, RUN.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Karen Zerkell did an excellent job extracting my teeth . She extracted the teeth with ease and without pain.

They have truly helped me in so many ways, are always willing to explain everything they are doing, and overall do a great job! Can’t recommend them enough!

Fantastic experience: There are no tier 1 Dentist in Decatur, I was going to Aspen dental thinking because they took my insurance, it was the best I could do, and it was costing me a fortune every time I went in, up front for the entire care plan before the work was done, never would order anything for pain, I couldn't get in for emergency treatment twice, would have to wait for three weeks, wouldn't order me an antibiotic until I had been seen, they do not pull teeth, they made me pay for expensive deep cleanings before they did work on me, I was in horrible pain, with swelling when I found you guys, I got right in, got antibiotic, pain med, tooth pulled as soon as swelling was improved, and all my issues was addressed quickly, and Dentist is so polite, and kind, and gentle. And I haven't had to spend even close to what I did at Aspen. I hated to have to drive to Springfield for appts but it is so worth it, and I am thankful to finally be getting the care I have been needing. Love all the staff, they are truly the best.

Negative experience: I'm very upset that Renken office courtesy was not extended to me. Hygienist gave FMX rays a year too soon. My insurance covers every 3 yrs. I'm a senior citizen and should have been extended that courtesy. The billing office is forcing me to pay this unnecessary bill. This should not have happened.

Fantastic experience: In all honesty, I’m not a big fan of extractions but it is what it is. The day after the procedure there was no pain so in that regard I’m very satisfied. I’m sure I can ‘pull’ through it.

Negative experience: In my opinion, experience, and judgement, this dentistry is predatory among new clients having to switch dentists due to new employment and insurance. When attempting to have a standard cleaning covered under insurance, they will REFUSE you that service and BULLY you out the door if one does not agree to their upselling of prescribed services not covered by insurance. If you are a minority, just needing a standard cleaning covered under insurance, this is not the dentistry to do business with. You will be DISCRIMINATED against. Do not do business here. This dentistry has been reported to the insurance company for predatory policies and refusal of simple services covered by insurance. They are in the business of manipulating insurance coding and billing for a profit. Take your business elsewhere. The local community deserves better business ethics.

Fantastic experience: This offer does an incredible job with scheduling. I am always checked in quickly and seen at the time of my scheduled appointment. I greatly appreciate their respect for their patients time while still serving our needs completely!

Fantastic experience: I've been to two other dental groups in Springfield, and asked coworkers for suggestions which is what led me to Renken. It's wonderful to have a team of professionals who are as interested in working with me to maintain healthy teeth as I am. I've been lied to and pushed to have teeth pulled that were in near perfect condition. When I expressed this to Renken during my first visit, I was assured they would never do that. I think you have a life-long patient in me, and I will recommend you to anyone looking for a dentist.
