Fantastic experience: Pleasant visit today, Elizabeth Bon from the Ortho dept was really nice

Negative experience: I started receiving treatment here after moving from Texas, and I was eager to continue my braces treatment as I have a very difficult case. My first patient initial exam took 4 hours, and all for the dental tech (Jesse) to break one of my canine exposure chain, leading to a very expensive surgery. I didn’t bother to bring this up as I wanted to get it over with. Almost every appointment has taken me 2 hours, just for a quick 10 minute procedure. I only ever hear negative comments from the main doctor, and I feel like my progress isn’t going well. They seem very understaffed on the ortho side, leading to a lot of things to be over looked. However, dental is good and I love the staff on that side. The receptionists are really nice as well. If insurance and money weren’t a problem, I would transfer some place else.

Positive experience: I got a root canal done here it went good im on a full week now or so they didnt perform and initial clean inside the tooth and my abscess as well when cleaned i got it done somewhere else though price difference is major though the person i went to was out of network. Overall though great for basic dentistry so far especially for cost relevance as well as you dont get any surprise bills they usually make sure to figure out what they fully cover first and what they dont as well as quick quotes/cost for in moments procedures such as i had someone else start my tooth and they werent fully aware and got me a new cost and was able to work on it still. I will update this in the future if needed for the work of my root canal procedure. My small cons is shaving off some of my enamel, glue from braces left when i was younger, as well as a bit of lack of comfort for the patients (the sun was in my eyes the entire time felt like i was going to go blind until i decided to place my hat over my eyes) Their appointments can be a little bit further out as well sometimes especially with what should be a more immediate concern (mouth trauma occurred dec 2nd had no insurance so i went in a month later on jan 2nd and got no initial treatment the way they figured i need root canal was by tapping my tooth and yes of course it was already hurting so that hurt really bad my tooth still wasnt fully stiff yet as well, instead or applying a cold tip which could have saved me a lot of pain and discomfort) Doctor kimberly i believe is how its spelled was the one to perform for me

Negative experience: Everyone seemed really off their game - after it was all done I cancelled further appointments. Went in for cleaning/check up. Got x-rays (the tech was very nice, if a little rough), then moved to another area where I received two curt sentences from the doctor, then moved to another area with two technicians (I don't know their names, because they never introduced themselves nor explained what they would be doing) to get two small cavities filled. This was the worst dental experience I have ever had - these two techs seemed to be out of sync, even terse to each other while pretending I wasn't even there. Halfway through one left and another replaced them - they also did not introduce themselves. The pair would set something up, then walk away for ten minutes, sometimes with tools still in my mouth. No one at this point was using my name, just "she." All eventual procedures for my cavities - the burring, the epoxy, the curing - kept being re-done and re-done again like the first time wasn't good enough. I have cuts on my cheek and felt pain in my gums. I heard complaints about how my cheek was in the way, like I was an object, not a patient. After filling, my bite was off. I kept explaining this to the main tech/doctor? who then argued with me ("you're a grinder" "you're numb" "the paper shows something else" etc) A total dismissal that made me feel awful. The cleaning was unlike any cleaning I've ever had before - the quickest polish and brushed fluoride treatment. I received no tartar removal, no flossing. I have insurance, so this is confusing to me. I can't believe I paid to have such an experience, though I will say that I will say that the person that handled my billing was the sweetest. I'd find somewhere else, if your insurance can cover it.

Fantastic experience: I like the place,all staff friendly!?

Negative experience: My first time there the doctor was extremely rude, when they gave me my numbing shot the doctor didn't even inform me they were giving me a shot for numbing. I had to push her hands out of my mouth because I wasn't expecting the shot. During one of my procedures, the tool they used for my deep cleaning was leaking water all over my face. My all around experience wasn't to professional

Fantastic experience: Updated Dec 9, 2025: I agree with what I already posted so here it is again below. I have the utmost respect for anyone working on my teeth. These people are sweet as could be and gold! Extremely grateful for this Dental Practice. Previously said: Western Dental on E Vista Way in Oceanside CA has been extremely patient, kind and understanding with me - as well as very professional. They are doing exceptional work. I'm very happy & grateful to be there - and would recommend their practice to anyone. ❤️❤️

Negative experience: Dental office chose to wait to verify my insurance plan details until the appointment time even though we scheduled it weeks ago and stated they were unable to verify and refused to do the scheduled cleaning. I had my insurance ID card and photo ID.

Negative experience: This is our second time visiting this clinic, the wait is ridiculous! They call you back after about a 20’minute wait only to have you wait another hour for someone to come to you, to then wait again for the actual service. We walked out and did not go through with the cleaning! I def don’t recommend this clinic!

Negative experience: I went here they said I had 6 cavities got a second opinion and found out I had zero. Please get a second opinion if you go here.

Negative experience: I was sitting in an empty waiting room for 40 minutes. No one else waiting. Then I left after i heard i won't get the cleaning that i made an appointment for. Just xrays and then I have to wait even longer to get a consultation, they said I have to spend another hour there until I am finished. And for the cleaning? I am not coming back and wait again. I saw many prior complaints on reviews but hoped they would have changed their scheduling. I guess they haven't. Best of all, I made the appointment just two hours prior - so they already knew they are running behind, why did they even give me an appointment? They just assume people want to spend their day waiting? Stop wasting patient's time, it is very unprofessional and disrespectful.

Negative experience: Terrible clinic! They ignored the fact that I don’t fully understand English, dismissed my thyroid condition, and still tried to sell me overpriced gum cream. All they care about is money, not patients. Horrible clinic! They never asked me, just pushed overpriced gum cream, added it to my bill without consent, and now call me every day.

Negative experience: go somewhere else for a second opinion pls i can not stress this enough . i get msgs from time to time to schedule a cleaning but i wouldn’t even bother coming here. long wait. u have an appointment? u waiting an additional 15-40 mins. the doctor who filled my cavities the last time i was here didn’t wait for the numbing to kick in and i felt EVERYTHING the DRILL. i literally cried and im a grown adult! i already don’t like the dentist and the 3 years i had my braces with them, absolutely not . there was always a language barrier with the lady who does the x-rays. the doctor who actually “cleans” and “does the filling” so impatient. the lady in ortho- doesn’t properly check your brackets. the older gentleman before her ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS cared for your teeth and smile. oh and if you are scheduled for a cleaning HA u there for 3-5 HOURS ! absolutely INSANE!

Negative experience: PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE TAKING YOUR CHILDREN HERE. Unsafe, Traumatizing, and Absolutely Unacceptable This was one of the most disturbing and disrespectful healthcare experiences I’ve ever had as a parent. I brought my 6-year-old in for a basic cleaning. We arrived early. We weren’t called back until 40 minutes after our appointment time. No apology, no update—just silence. I had to ask the front desk myself what was going on. Once inside, we were placed in a hot, poorly ventilated shared room with two other patients—one of them a small child being treated alone, without a parent present. The air conditioning was clearly off. In a clinical setting, this is not only unprofessional but potentially unsafe. Clinics are expected to maintain a sanitary, cool environment, and this was far from it. The X-ray tech couldn’t tell me if the X-rays were digital. She didn’t seem trained to explain anything, which is a serious problem when we’re talking about radiation exposure for a young child. Then came the dentist’s diagnosis: seven cavities and four baby root canals. This was said without showing me the X-rays, without explaining anything about which teeth were affected, and without offering any conservative or alternative treatments. I asked about materials. His response? “Crowns.” When I asked for more detail, he told me “the FDA wouldn’t approve anything unsafe.” That’s simply false. The FDA has approved formocresol (a formaldehyde-based chemical), BPA, and metal crowns with nickel. Approving something doesn’t make it safe for everyone—especially children. But what disturbed me most was what happened next: When I asked about the root canal process, I was told—without shame—that they “strap children down” using an “old school” method. No sedation, no emotional preparation. Just restraint. I was horrified. When I questioned this, the staff member coldly said, “It’s there on the paper I gave you—in English, the language you requested.” That kind of dismissive, condescending response has no place in pediatric care. It showed me exactly what kind of clinic this is: high-volume, low-compassion, aggressive, outdated, and completely lacking in trauma-informed care. They never once mentioned Silver Diamine Fluoride, ozone therapy, minimally invasive fillings, tooth monitoring, or even a discussion about how close the affected teeth might be to falling out naturally. Just straight to drilling, root canals, and restraint. If you care about your child’s long-term emotional and physical well-being, do not take them here. This office is not equipped for modern, respectful, or biologically-conscious dental care. I will be reporting this to the dental board and seeking care from a holistic pediatric provider who understands consent, biocompatibility, and actual child-centered care.

Negative experience: I arrived early for my appointment and am still waiting 40 minutes past my appointment time to be called back. The disrespect for the patient’s time is unreal.

Negative experience: It is a busy clinic. People are nice, but there automated text system to leave a review is horrible and intrusive. It keeps sending a reminder everyday to leave a review. ALSO if you just want to get your teeth cleaned they seem to not have enough staff. Too many patients--not enough staff. No personal service. Felt like I was a part in a factory like part of an assembly line. The people are nice though.

Negative experience: My experience with Dr. Mary Lynn Merz has been extremely disappointing and frustrating. From the start, the appointments have felt cold and uninviting, and any attempt to ask questions is met with impatience and a dismissive attitude. During one visit, I was simply trying to explain that I followed instructions about using rubber bands, but instead of support or understanding, Dr. Merz responded with unnecessary hostility that left me feeling disrespected and completely discouraged. This isn’t an isolated incident, I’ve witnessed similar rude and tense behavior toward other patients. If you’re looking for a doctor who listens, communicates clearly, and treats patients with respect, I strongly advise you to look elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: What an awesome experience here. Especially on my very first visit! Amy was incredibly sweet and has such a good heart — I’m so thankful I got to meet her. The front desk staff is amazing and always so helpful. They always answer their phones. I never once had to leave a voicemail, which is rare these days!!! I originally came from South Oceanside Group, and let me just say… this place is a huge improvement in every way, do not allow fancier looking places to decieve you. Dr. Somaye / I ams orry if I didnt spell your name correctly, she is such a kind and caring person. She’s helping me take care of my meeth and helping with my braces. She ecently extracted four of my teeth. During the whole process, she kept checking in to make sure I was okay. That kind of care means everything. I’m so happy to be here. Thank you all so much for making this experience so positive.

Negative experience: This visit was not good. I had my teeth cleaned and the associate you cleaned my teeth took of enamel from one of my teeth. Very disappointing

Negative experience: I called and booked a teeth cleaning, they booked me an appointment but then called me later saying they missed booked me, booked me another appointment I didn’t ask for. Immediately started texting and emailing me spam. They end up calling me and rebooking me three different times, I confirmed multiple times that I wanted a cleaning , went in and they had me wait an hour, took X-rays and exam, then didn’t even do a cleaning, told me I was mistaken and didn’t book a cleaning. Basically told me that a general cleaning is pointless and I needed a deep clean that cost a ton of my insurance. Thanks for wasting three hours. Don’t go to them

Fantastic experience: Update: went back again recently to get a permanent. Permanent fit perfectly the first time. The nice old lady joked with me asking if I was pregnant. No I'm just big. 10/10 will go back again for the honesty and awkward jokes. Quick to get an appointment for my crown. Yesenia was very friendly. I can highly recommend this office.

Coming here I was nervous, but Dr. Samaye and Eva have listened to my concerns and have been nothing but wonderful and compassionate. Negative experience: So horrible. The instruments looked so dirty. The mirror above me during my cleaning had splatter marks from previous patients. They moved me from chair to chair and no one really told me what was going on.

Fantastic experience: I am very satisfied with my experience at Western Dental, especially Dr. Marshall. She is the best and would recommend her to anyone.

Negative experience: The office is a mess. They schedule people on top of other appointments because corporate wants them to do this so I once waited 2 hours to be seen. Another time I came in and they didn’t have me on the schedule when I remember making an appointment. They messed up a few of my teeth because they didn’t read the medical notes. Now my insurance is trying to approve the correct procedure and I’ve been in pain for weeks. They will only schedule one appointment at a time which is very frustrating when you’re busy and they end up having no openings. The doctors are rushed to work on as many patients as they can during office hours. I’ve seen the receptionists be rude and unprofessional to the doctors themselves which is absolutely unacceptable and even the manager has given attitude to the dentists and this has happened right in front of clients. There is a very old dental tech that works there that once touched everything with the medical gloves she had on like a dirty computer, wires because the computer wasnt working and shewas about to do x-rays on my mouth so I told her she needed to change her gloves before going near my mouth. The lobby and bathrooms are dirty.This place needs to be inspected by the health department.

Negative experience: I went in for deep cleaning. They spilt it into 2 sessions. The first session was good. Came back for the 2nd session, it was a below average. They also recommended me to do the gum treatment which cost about $1,000.00. Which consists of the 2 trays and 6 tubes of gum gel and 1 toothpaste. No directions or consultation from a doctor on how to use it. My problem was, my teeth get very sensitive when I use them. I ask if I can get some of my money back. I do not wish to go on with this treatment and I would give 5 of gel tubes back. They wouldn’t accommodate. I believe this happened before. Why don’t they start you with 1 tube and track your progress? No, they gave you everything with minimal instructions or follow up. I write this up so they can change their protocol and others can avoid. Thank you for reading this.

Negative experience: 2 fillings took way too long. Not even that worried about the time. I still cannot close my teeth together. The fillings are messy and way too high. Now I have to go back and get them ground back down

Negative experience: I was given an appointment at 10am for a deep teeth cleaning. I said twice that I have a baby at home with my husband and I can't wait long. In the end, they called me at 10:30. I sat in the medical chair for another 30 minutes and then they told me that I had to wait another 40 minutes. I was very unhappy with this approach and appointment. The first was the same. This is the wrong approach to the client.

Fantastic experience: Elizabeth Bon was my assistant today in Oceanside office. My appointment today was very well and attended to. I was treated with kindness, and I will continue to be a guest at Western Dental.

Negative experience: My mom performed some crowning procedures on march 8th, and the nurse assistant ‘accidentally’ or ‘carelessly’ pulled her dentures so it fell on the floor and her dentures cracked / broke. The dentist said they will replace it and will expedite in 1 week (because she does not have any dentures and cannot go to work and face customers). As of today, march 18th, the dentures are not yet available.. I am hoping this review will help them expedite this process, because this is a big inconvenience and overall service is unacceptable.

Negative experience: My son was getting his wisdom teeth removed and insurance covered the removal but, show up for the appointment and they wanna do a bone graff/synthetic bone for 1258.00 extra , it's a gotcha tactic that you need to have it and try and squeeze you for more money without any warning. At the appointment to schedule it they said nothing about these fees. Find a dentist that's honest and I know how hard that is probably impossible! Or head to Mexico and get your dental work done alot cheaper. Typical scam artists, Dentist need more regulation as far as I can tell and talking with dental suppliers they don't have alot prices are really whatever they make up! Please buyer beware and not just here every dental office.

Negative experience: Amy and Dr. M Leroy are the people you want to see... They are an amazing pair and very professional and sweet. Thank you both for making me feel comfortable. Update: It has gone down hill, everytime I come in I've waited more than 15min passed my appointment time. The last doctor I got checked in with was very impatient and didn't help me with my painful fulfilling. She sent me to another office for a crown! I am not coming back.

Negative experience: Horrible experience. Watch your back and teeth here!!! They not only make you wait- 3 hours for my appointment (all they did were x rays and a Quick Look in my mouth) but they also tried to sell me a $1200 treatment plan and also braces! I thought I was going for a simple cleaning and turns out I almost got SCAMMED into this. Thank god I read the fine print and trusted my gut here. Don’t go!

Fantastic experience: The office looks not so clean, but the doctors are great. They give many more options than in a clean office I was before. Doctor Marshal gave me an option to save two of my teeth, and there I can choose the color of my crowns, which was not in the previous dentistry. Hilda C. did a deep cleaning for me yesterday. I am satisfied.

Negative experience: Takes forever to get an appointment, the orthodontist rarely works there, they try to upcharge and offer things that insurance doesn't want to pay for. Over all I have been here 2X and had negative experiences and will not be going back.

Fantastic experience: Medical billing is always really confusing at the end of the day, but Leslie helped me understand where my money was going and when. She took her time to answer all my questions and did not make me feel silly for asking. I have not had a procedure here yet, but my experience with Leslie and the receptionists was great.

Fantastic experience: Braces and Ortho Dept. shout out to Elizabeth Bon! Very light handed, asked multiple times if I was okay during my brace tightening. This is the second time I have her and I hope she does my treatment next time too!

Negative experience: All that was done was buffing my teeth. The woman didn’t even look at most of the application of what they use to buff. She forgot the water most of the time and when she did use it she missed, got my face. She also forgot to use the suction to remove the water twice and I had to ask for it. It was just my 3 month upkeep visit. She was a nice woman, but .. my 16 year old grandson would have done a better job. Not sure I’ll go back. She did my teeth cleaning before and was much better that time. We all have bad days, this was a bad day.
