Negative experience: Trying to get my teeth fixed since day 1 and getting the runaround

Fantastic experience: I went in for my biannual cleaning and the hygienist, Deena, once again did a great painless cleaning. The staff was wonderful.
Fantastic experience: Rena, my dental hygienist, was an absolute joy. Extremely thorough, knowledgeable and incredibly sweet and approachable. Could not recommend her more. 10/10
Negative experience: Cleaning took over an hour. Technician was too aggressive and was not careful in cleaning my teeth without harming the gum areas. Will not allow him to do my cleaning the next time. PS. My blood pressure went up over 70 points from this episode.

Negative experience: I have scheduled my appointment with them just because the practice is open on Fridays. I would never return back regarding the procedure I received and my previous dentist confirmed that I don’t need this procedure. I feel that I can’t trust these people there any more.

Fantastic experience: They were very kind and attentive to my dental hygiene needs. They informed me about a change in my insurance plan and let me know that a night guard was covered, which I truly appreciated since I wasn’t aware of that and had been interested in getting one for some time. Dental assistant Angie helped get my appointment started and was very helpful and friendly. Overall, I’m very happy with the excellent service from this dental office! Thank you RenovaSmiles :)
Fantastic experience: Great experience! I had to come in for an emergency appointment, and they were attentive, listened to my symptoms, took xrays, and walked me through what was going on. Very professional and capable, and very friendly! The offering of emergency appointments is really great.
Positive experience: Overall, I had a good visit, but the experience didn't quite match the branding. Renovasmiles’ marketing materials feature photos of very modern offices with high-tech equipment, but the Franconia location I visited today didn't reflect that. The office felt a bit chaotic, and the technology seemed dated compared to the ads—the staff struggled to get the X-ray machine working, which added a significant delay to the appointment. Since this was my first visit, I’m not sure if this is standard for this location, but the reality was definitely different from the image presented online.
Fantastic experience: Very nice, helpful and kind staff. It is a little tight space wise. If you speak Spanish, that may be beneficial and easier for communication. From my first impression, I would recommend this dentist to people. They are very attentive.

Fantastic experience: I was referred to this dental office by Fort Belvoir dental to get a crown. Entering the office, I was greeted by all of the receptionist. Everyone was friendly and accommodating, my dental assistant. Mr. Bilal Called me back immediately for both appointments and my dentist Dr. Tran came in a timely manner as well. Both were friendly and started friendly conversation. The temporary crown and crown was done with no issues. I have minimum to no pain and I’m very happy. I was able to come to this office to get the job done. I was in and out with appointments in the receptionist were sweet each appointment. The one that interacted with me the most Ms. Yourdanos and Ms. Silvia was nice as well. Thank you all for a Wonderful and easy visit
Fantastic experience: I haven't been to the dentist for almost 2 yrs bc of a bad experience with a dentist. I finally went bc my husband wouldn't stop nagging and I am glad I did. The hygienist , Jam, was kind, gentle and patient. The dentist was also very kind. He listened to my concerns and spoke to me with respect. I need some more work done and the scheduling process was quick and easy. I will update if there are any changes.

Fantastic experience: Very, very conveniently located in the Rosehill shopping center. An efficient team of receptionists, dental assistant, dental hygienist and dentists. My cleaning and assessment were completed within 35 minutes. I am very satisfied with their services and options to address all of my dental issues. My experience with Dr Barragan and the RenovaSmiles team has made it clear that this a top dental care team. They are my General Dental team.

Fantastic experience: This was my first visit and Jam, Anthony, and Dr. Lobo were fantastic!
Negative experience: I had to wait 40 minutes for the appointment that lasted for like 10 minutes. 10 minutes make sense but 40 minutes doesn’t make any sense. On top of that the lady at the customer service said I will check with the back on what is causing this delay. She took 5 more minutes to leave her desk.
Fantastic experience: Appointment number 2 and I’m still extremely satisfied with the atmosphere , staff , and the work done ! Dr Lobo was great ! Explained the process every step of the way (as it was my first time having this work done) and my hygienist Norma was amazing once again . I’ve seen two of the dentists here so far and based on their knowledge and compassion I would trust ANY of the dentists on staff at this location . The work is always immaculate and they care enough to ask what your priorities are and not just what brings in the most money for them . Always a pleasure

Fantastic experience: Front staff was very nice and helpful! Silvia was amazing! The entire office was clean. Each cleaning room had a TV with something to watch. They always discussed prices before starting any procedures that are not covered. I really appreciated that! Hygienist Jam was kind, gentle, amazing and very helpful with instructions for flossing. Happy to have found this practice right next door to my primary care doctors at Franconia Internists!
Positive experience: Pleasant experience, from the front desk to the dental assistant and check out lady, I just wish the doctor was not in a such rush checking on my X-rays and recommendations, feels like she had a goal of how many patients talk to per hour

Fantastic experience: I was very nervous and hesitant going to a dentist appointment. After leaving, I felt fabulous! My confidence level went up. From getting scheduled and checking in the front office everything was excellent! The Scheduler was very professional.All the administration staff at the front desk were eager to see me and were very organized about everything. Everything was explained to be me very simply and in details.The Dental hygienist ( Aaron) was so kind,humble , and supportive He made me feel so comfortable!!Rockstar dental hygienist l!! Now the Dentist! Mr.Bobal ( sorry for the misspelling). Literally amazing Dentist ever! He was gentle and made sure I was ok through the process. He was very kind and professional,humble. Fantastic experience: I had been looking for a good dentist for a long time after having a terrible experience at my previous clinic. I found RenovaSmiles because they offer Saturday appointments, which was very convenient. The staff here are friendly and helpful, and I never felt pressured into any procedure—it was always on my own terms. Dr. Ortega was very kind and professional. I didn’t feel any pain when getting my tooth filled, and he clearly explained what he did along with helpful recommendations. My hygienist, Dawn, was also wonderful—she kept checking to make sure I was comfortable, which I really appreciated. I would definitely come back and highly recommend RenovaSmiles to anyone looking for a new dentist.

Negative experience: Had a 9:30 a.m. appointment. Wasn’t seen until 10:45. I specifically asked before booking what time I’d be done and was told by 10:30. Based on that, I scheduled another doctor’s appointment at 11:30. I also booked specifically for a root canal, which two other dentists already confirmed I needed, instead, I was only given a consult and told to come back another day for a filling. I pushed for the filling that same day since they’d already wasted my time and made me cancel my other appointment, which led to a no-show fee for me to pay because of them. The staff is also super rude. When I asked how much longer it would be, the man at the front desk rolled his eyes, sighed, and ignored me. Someone behind him had to step in and answer since he wouldn’t. That same person also kept telling me to sit down because “they’re busy.” My appointment was at 9:30. It should not take an hour and 15 minutes to see a patient. That too for a consult only according to their booking. If they’re that overbooked, they need to rethink how many people they cram into one day. Administrative problems aside, the dentist Jhosdyn Barragan, himself is rude and has zero communication skills. I remember previously asking to see another dentist as well but was denied because apparently I have to stick with who saw me last. He doesn’t explain the issue, the procedure, or any treatment plan, he just hands you off to a staff member to talk for him. He does not care to listen to your concerns and is very quick to be in and out. He’s also extremely aggressive. One of his assistants told me “your mouth is too small,” as an excuse for how rough a FILLING was. Not only is that evidence of their BS but also quite unnecessary and rude to say to a patient. I ended up bleeding badly because his tools kept hitting my lips, gums, and cheek. I had a simple filling, but once the anesthesia wore off, I was in severe pain and had to take Tylenol. By day 2, my cheek was cut up, bruised, and swollen. - also need to note here that he did not wait even 5 seconds to numb me before putting a needle in my mouth… isn’t the point of the numbing gel to decrease the pain? Or is it just performative? I came in for a root canal , that’s what I needed and what I was told by at least two other dentists. Instead, he chose to do a filling to save time. He ignored all my concerns about sensitivity or the fact that the tooth visibly needs a root canal. The sensitivity in my tooth never went away, meaning the nerve is still inflamed or infected. Instead of addressing the real problem, he did a quick fix that made things worse. My tooth pain is now unbearable, and I have to go back to my regular dentist for the root canal. I only came here because my dentist was fully booked and I was in pain. Huge mistake. This place is rough, careless, and aggressive. Do not bring your kids here, they’ll leave in pain. I have a high pain tolerance and still left with severe pain and injuries from how rough he was. There are way better options than this place.

This was my first visit at RenovaSmiles and I need to say that it was THE BEST experience in a very long time at a dentist office. EVERYONE!! from the front office staff, to the AMAZING Hygienist Deena, the scanner tech, the very professional Dr. Li—I am speechless of this very well trained staff and the respect and care shown by each one them. I am for sure staying here forever, and I am bringing my whole family too. I love how detailed they are explaining all the procedures done to you before they get done. They show you in paper if the procedure is covered or not by your insurance before you agree to it, and show you exactly how you will be paying, if any. It is all so transparent and it made me feel at such ease. I am just so pleased with this amazing experience that I can recommend it to everyone and feel great about it. I am here to stay. Great job to the whole staff!!! You are all AWESOME!!!!! ————————————————————————————- I guess getting old makes you forgetful! I thought I sent the review above long time ago on my first visit, but when I tried sending another review of today’s visit, this website said “I NEVER sent the first one I wrote. My apologies!!!! Well, I am sending this one on 10/29/2925 today, about my visit today. So I have to say that the front office staff is AMAZING as always!!! They are always so welcoming and they decorate the office with such a great taste!!! Kudos!!! I have to say that the Dental Hygienist who said she was just helping today, was THE BEST I ever had in my life. She took the time and the effort to clean my teeth and remove all the stains I had. I am so sorry, I asked her name but forgot. But today I was taken care by two women- the first young dental assistant that was so sweet and got me a warm blanket when I told her I was freezing, and polish my teeth before the doctor came in, she was amazing, and then the Dental Hygienist that blew my mind with her effort to clean my teeth—they both made my day. I hope she stays in that office because I will choose her every time, but she said she was only helping today. About the Dentist, I don’t have anything great to say. I feel he is there for the business and not for the patients. He offers you a treatment that is going to make them more money than just a cleaning, and if you decline, he either say, I will see you next time and leaves, or shows disappointment at your decision. He is focus in making money and is as cold as the water they spray in your mouth while cleaning your teeth. Maybe that is what he is being asked in that office—to be just business, but that doesn’t create a good relationship between dentist-patient. So to me, to see him or any other dentist, doesn’t make a difference. He is completely different than the rest of the staff. In general, great Dental Office!!!!
Fantastic experience: Love the team here! Their Halloween decor was awesome! Got seen right away and did not have to wait long for the dentist. Dr. Barragan painlessly did my filling and I was in and out in less than an hour! Staff is super friendly as well!

Positive experience: Hygienist was pushy in selling other stuff. Cleaning was good but flossing was not thorough. I ended up getting a mouth guard. The schedule is prompt. Good neighborhood dental service. Dentists are always nice.

Fantastic experience: I was In a bind and went for a cleaning. had a very good experience from front desk to hygienist Catherine and lastly dr do. No issues they were very friendly. Just got a cleaning done. Weren’t pushy when trying to sell me a mouth guard which I do need but declined for now. Based off this experience I would recommend. Update - stopped in again for cleaning. Another great experience!

Negative experience: It was my first time at Renovasmiles. The person at the front desk asked where I was from and kept staring at me, I awkwardly answered. I did not like the service provided by Dr. Ortega. He decided to show me what he had taken out of my mouth. He said "this is coming out." I felt humiliated. I tried to change my dentist but I was asked the reason and did not feel comfortable sharing, I felt embarrassed. The receptionist went on to say that if I wanted a different dentist that a new evaluation would be needed which did not make sense because it was at the same facility. I decided to then cancel all upcoming appointments. Will definitely not go back to Renovasmiles regardless of location.

Negative experience: This was one of the most unprofessional dentist appointments I have ever had. I got in before my appointment at 8, they couldn't find my appointment at first, asking me if I am new, I wasn't. I was brought back, but than just left to wait. There were several breaks in the cleaning where the hygienist left to do other things. That never happened when Dr. Mestes ran the practice. At the end I was told my insurance didn't cover items that it covered previously this year. The office said, the insurance may have changed. I said I have never heard of the insurance changing policy during the term. Changes are common upon renewal. The office was so confident it wasn't covered. They finally agreed to review and came back and said sorry it was. Then I was told I was done. I hadn't seen the dentist yet. I was surprised and said, oh I am not going to see the dentist? After I stood up and started walking away the dentist came in...my wife's appointment was after mine and a cleaning without any x rays or work took 1.5 hours. She said she waited very long for the dentist. That has to be the most unprofessional dentist appointment I have ever had.

Positive experience: They brought me in the room and the lady who took the xrays could barely speak English so so kinda just moved me around and they were extremely uncomfortable I felt like I was going to choke when she did them. I've never has that feeling ever at a dentist . And they just felt like they were rushing everything. I was supposed to get call from the dentist that's what she told me but I never received a call. I just didn't get the feels from the hygienist you know the nice comfy cleaning like I said the whole thing felt like they rushed it all. Hope you don't have to experienced what I did.

Negative experience: I went in here after they called me 1000000 times for my cleaning! After X-rays they tell me I need a deep cleaning and that my insurance company wouldn’t be covering it! They come back with a 1700 bill saying that’s what it would cost to get the deep cleaning done with out insurance!!! I immediately leave the office and go call my insurance company they tell me no that’s not true you are 100% covered 0 charge or co pay all they would of had to do is email over the x rays to show I needed the service!!!!!!! So they obviously didn’t want to keep a client cause I’m never going back in making a appointment with another dentist that’s near my house instead of driving 20 mins away so they can waste my time.

Fantastic experience: I went in for a routine cleaning and had an excellent experience from start to finish. The staff was warm and welcoming, and I was impressed by their use of modern equipment—especially the handheld X-ray machine, which made the process quick and comfortable. My hygienist was fantastic. She took the time to explain proper oral care and gave me helpful tips on what habits to avoid. I also appreciated the use of a topical anesthetic before the cleaning—it made a big difference for my sensitive teeth. After the cleaning, the dentist was thorough and honest in his evaluation. He pointed out a large silver filling that he wanted to monitor but said it was stable for now. In the past, multiple dentists had recommended replacing it with a crown. I even saw a specialist who confirmed it was still intact and didn't need any immediate work. Hearing the same conservative approach from this dentist gave me confidence that the practice is focused on patient care, and not pushing unnecessary procedures. That moment alone earned my trust. This was my first visit, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a trustworthy, professional dental team.

Negative experience: They text me constantly about my appointments, then do not follow up on whether my insurance will cover anything. Makes you feel like a piece of meat and not a person. Dentists and dental hygienist's are great

Positive experience: My first time here... The front desk staff didn't explain my treatment plan. I had to ask for it. Also, they were scheduling me for the wrong procedure, luckily the doctor heard her and corrected it. This is the first time I went in for a cleaning and didn't recieve a toothbrush or anything for free. Everything was suggestions for me to purchase at the office. I had to ask for a prescription for the toothpaste they suggested I use. Otherwise it would have been $25 additional dollars if I purchased from this office. I have to return a I need some dental work. Since they have all the trays and such, I hope my 2nd experience is better. It would also be nice if the doctor would clearly explain the work they're doing at the time.

Negative experience: I recently visited Renova Smiles in Alexandria, VA, after being advised to undergo a root canal retreatment. After following their recommendation, I was unexpectedly told that I would need to replace my crown, a procedure not covered by insurance. This contradicts the initial information I was given, where I was assured that a filling would suffice, not a full replacement. To make matters worse, I now have a hole in my tooth, exposing the $700+ root canal that was retreated. Replacing the crown will cost over $1000, and the office manager told me, ‘It’s fine if you do not want to get the crown done.’ If I had known the crown might need replacing, I would have waited for a better time when it could be covered by insurance. This entire process has felt disorganized, and I’m left questioning the office’s commitment to transparency and patient care. The dentist did not take the time to thoroughly explain the potential outcomes or consider the financial impact of this decision. Instead, I am now in a difficult position with a hole in my tooth and an uncovered crown replacement looming over me. Additionally, my multiple interactions with the office have been disappointing. As someone with a busy schedule and new to the area, it’s difficult to navigate the trial-and-error process of finding reliable healthcare providers. At this point, I’ve decided that Renova Smiles is not the right fit for me, and I would not recommend this office to others who value their time, money, and dental health. In regard to Renova Smiles response: Thank you for your response. However, I must express that your explanation does not fully align with the information I received from your office manager, nor with my experience during treatment. Specifically, I was told directly over the phone by the office manager that my crown had shifted, which was used as justification for the need to replace it. Yet, looking at the X-rays and your official communication, no such shifting was detected. This contradiction between what was said verbally and what is recorded is deeply concerning and misleading. Furthermore, the lack of clear communication and transparency throughout this process has left me feeling that my care was handled unprofessionally. Being told one thing in conversation and having official notes reflect something different not only undermines trust but also complicates my ability to make informed decisions regarding my dental health and finances. I expected a more consistent and honest approach from your office, especially given the complexity and cost involved. Unfortunately, this experience has fallen far short of that standard. I hope moving forward you can improve on your communication and ethics to better serve your clients.

Negative experience: I will NEVER let this dentist touch my teeth again! The visit was chaotic with no less than 4 people asking me to complete forms while taking my blood pressure, AND trying to get me to sign financial forms obligating me to overpriced services for an implant. After placing a temporary crown on my tooth, the staff began harassing phone calls and texts every 2 days begging me to get a cleaning from them (While wearing a temporary crown)! After 2 weeks of wearing the temporary crown, the staff called to tell me that the permanent crown would no longer be ready next week (2 weeks later), and that I’d be wearing the temporary crown another week or two (a month with a temporary crown is insane)! Needless to say, I will not be back! If the permanent crown doesn’t arrive and isn’t placed on my tooth next week, I will be requesting a refund and taking my refund to a different dentist who can get the permanent crown on my tooth quickly! The dentist got upset after I declined the implant services and stated I’d be getting it done elsewhere, so he’s procrastinating on the permanent crown! If you want a comfortable dentist visit where you’re not harassed to get additional services, and where you won’t be in a temporary crown for a month, go anywhere but RenovaSmiles! The location is also seedy.

Regarding the temporary crown and the delay with the permanent one, we understand how frustrating and inconvenient that must have been. While we do our best to ensure timely delivery from our dental labs, holidays such as July 4th in your case can and did interrupt the lab schedule we typically expect.
In terms of our staff’s outreach, our intention is always to support continuity of care—not to pressure anyone. Although we always treat emergencies, it is our standard to provide comprehensive care to our patients. There is no clinical issue with a comprehensive exam or cleaning while in a temporary crown, if anything it improves the oral environment prior to cementation of the permanent crown.
We also regret that you felt pressured regarding treatment options and financial forms. Before any treatment is rendered out our office we present a full itemized explanation including expected insurance benefits and make sure to attain patient signature prior to commencing any work.

Positive experience: The cleaning was good and the dentist and dental hygienist really took the time to explain everything. My one piece of feedback is for the office to improve their intake procedures. We got multiple random texts and calls to confirm the appointment after we had already confirmed, and we filled out the forms online but had to do them again by hand when we got there. Would suggest trying to streamline the process. But overall we’re happy with the service and will be returning.

Fantastic experience: I had a wisdom tooth extraction and replacement of an old filling . Dr. Barragan is extremely competent. He was warm, professional, and he was fast. The whole thing was done at warp speed in about 3 to 4 minutes before I knew anything happened. There was no pain then and there is no pain now even after the anesthesia has worn off. They are good at what they do.
