Martin Dentistry of Johnson City

Negative experience: The hygienist was very professional and thorough on the first visit, though the amount of imaging on that initial visit was definitely overkill, and as a result was uncomfortably long. It felt as though they were trying to squeeze extra billing points out of our insurance, so I made it clear that they should limit imaging to what the insurance would pay for. The dentist spent so little time with me on that first visit, I don’t even remember who it was, except that it was a man and he did not address many of the concerns that I had about my teeth. Instead, even though I have never missed a dental cleaning, the dentist seemed to indicate that I needed a LOT of dental work, including several crowns and fillings. That was rather shocking, since my last dentist, 6 months before, had not indicated any of this. They recommended a prescription fluoride toothpaste, which they said I could buy through their practice; I found out after buying it that I could have obtained this at my local pharmacy for less than half the price of what they charged me in their office. Despite all this, I decided to make an appointment for a filling, which I had to wait months for. They called a few days ahead of the appointment to confirm. I missed the call, but called back to confirm; the person I talked to asked me to spell my name, as if they were looking up my appointment, then said, “Okay, we’ll see you then.” When I went in for my appointment, they couldn’t find it in their schedule! Apparently, whoever said that I was checked in, did not check me in, so they cancelled then gave away my appointment. I had proof on my phone call log, but they didn’t offer to get me in as a result of THEIR mistake; instead they asked me to reschedule the appointment! This is ridiculous and extremely unprofessional! I’ve never experienced such terribly impersonal treatment and customer service in a dentist. As far as I’m concerned, that was three strikes, so I will NOT be going back to Martin Dentistry.

Fantastic experience: I got my first filling here and it was completely painless. 2 hours later and I still can’t feel anything . Definitely recommend if you get nervous going to the dentist, no blinding lights, and no loud tools. 10/10

Fantastic experience: I was referred to Martin Dentisty. The ladies up front were nice and the dentist was so comical. It made my visit more pleasant. I had a broken tooth and he was able to remove it the same day. I will tell everyone about Martin Dentistry.

Negative experience: I don’t usually bother with writing reviews but I have to warn folks about Dr. Armbrister.I went in for a simple cleaning and this man tried to tell me I needed a whole bunch of crowns on teeth that were just fine.It felt like he was trying to sell me a used car, not fix my mouth…My husband is a retired dentist with over 30 years of experience.When I told him what Dr. Armbrister wanted to do he was shocked. He said none of those crowns were needed.Called it a big money grab and said Dr. Armbrister should be ashamed!!After my visit I read plenty of other reviews saying the same thing.This man pushes expensive treatments that folks don’t need just to make a buck. That’s wrong, plain and simple.The owner of that office ought to get rid of him.But if folks are still putting money in their pockets because of him, that’s probably why he’s still there. I’m willing to bet he’ll get his comeuppance.And let me tell you.He’s no better with his staff.I saw him snap and talk down to his assistant like she was dirt.I don’t buy into his nice act.It was embarrassing and downright nasty to watch..This man shouldn’t be allowed to treat patients much less make a living off of it…

Negative experience: My wife and I were new to the area and established care here 2 years ago. After the second visit, Dr. Armbrister insisted she would need replacement fillings where decay had set in. Although we were skeptical since she has needed just routine care less a couple cavities with our hometown dentist and has had no pain, we opted to redo a couple of fillings on one side (at a not-so-small out of pocket sum) and delay the other side until the next visit. When that visit came, he stated she would need multiple crowns due to fillings that were ‘failing’ - again no pain or sensitivity issues. All at a price of $800 per tooth. At this point, we decided to just do the routine visit and we scheduled a visit with our previous dentist (who I’ve been with since I was a kid) for a second opinion. Lo and behold, there was no decay and no need for filling replacements or crowns. Her teeth looked great. I’ve never had a bad experience at the dentist and frankly everyone here was always nice and easy to work with so I did not want to believe this office would purposely suggest unnecessary care. After reading through some reviews, it seems there are a number of accounts detailing the same exact experience. To be clear, I believe the dental techs provide great care and are excellent to work with, but I would be highly skeptical of any additional work that is suggested by Andrew Armbrister.

Negative experience: Dr. Armbrister is a good dentist. The dental technicians are very kind, caring, and skilled. The office staff is the actual worst. I will never go back to Martin Dentistry of Johnson City for this reason alone. In the past year I have been subject to forced rescheduling 15 minutes before my appointment, not believed even when I have reciepts, told dental procedures from June requiring payment were mine when I have not had an appointment since March and do not recieve periodontal treatments, found out we are actually out of network even though the office staff told me otherwise months ago, and -most recently- just never called or emailed back. I do not understand when this became acceptable conduct for a business. It's borderline shady dealings. I ask Martin Dentistry of Johnson City to please do better. You are dealing with people who work hard for their money and free time and do not have any to waste.

Having my teeth cleaned by Chloe to having dental work from Dr. Marshall has never been a bad experience. They are dedicated and the best in my opinion in their field. Chloe makes you feel comfortable and always ask how you are doing. She explains what she is doing as she goes. Yup, I can say going to the dentist is no problem....

Fantastic experience: I recently moved to the Tri-Cities area about 1 year ago and needed to establish a new dentist. I am very pleased that I chose Martin Dentistry of Johnson City. During today’s scheduled appointment, the front desk receptionists and staff were very friendly and courteous while greeting me. My dental hygienist, Beca (spelling?), was very friendly and professional, and did a superb job of cleaning my teeth. If you are looking for a new dentist within the area, I would highly recommend Martin Dentistry of Johnson City.

Fantastic experience: I was very impressed with the entire staff, however Becka did my cleaning and xrays she was amazing . She was caring compassionate, professional, and most of all did not make my experience traumatizing. My previous dentist was horrible, the dental hygienest put me through so much pain. Becka paid such close attention to detail and to my comfort. I will highly recommend Martin Dentistry. The Dentist was also concerned and was not trying to rip me off with unnecessary treatment. Negative experience: Came to Martin Dental over two months ago for a tooth that needed to be extracted. Was giving an antibiotic, X-ray etc, to say it took another 3 weeks just to get information on what my insurance would cover and not cover. I had to call the office my self to get my out of pocket. Working in health care myself. This is un called for. To be referred out to another office, and into a new month. Still no appointment with whom ever I was referred to. Martin Dentistry hasn’t even had anyone from their referral dept call and check on my appt. This office seems like a lot of our office in the Tri City. All about the money, not the patient.! No patient should have to make multiple phone calls to check a referral, to check out of pocket expenses .

Fantastic experience: Fantastic experience! I have been going to Dr. Armbrister now for 6 years. I go twice a year for cleaning, exams, and x-rays. It is always a pleasant experience when arriving there. I am always greeted with a pretty smile from Lisa at the front desk. When the hygienist greets me in the waiting area she is also there with a great attitude. "That says something about a business, when the employees make the customer/patient feel welcomed on arrival." It shows that the employees truly enjoy their job, and are grateful to have the position they do. When Dr. Armbrister does his final look at my teeth he makes me feel like he truly cares how I am taking care of my teeth. I always cross my fingers for no cavities, but I have had Dr. Armbrister fill one for me. He made that experience pain free from the start till the end. I am truly glad that I came aboard as a patient. Thanks to all at Armbrister Dental!

Fantastic experience: If you need to have dental work, I highly recommend Dr. Armbrister who is very knowledgeable and exceptionally passionate about implant denistry. Nicole was wonderful and all of the staff are always very friendly.

Positive experience: Seems that the people there were having a tough time. Apparently a new system is being implemented. I was patient and didn't feel put-out when asked to do something. I feel that I was being kind and considerate. They were not altogether mean, but were kinda short. I paid out of my pocket without insurance. You'd think that with the amount I paid they'd be more kindly. I work all day to pay their 1-hour fee. I don't demand to be treated nice, but I just wonder if some of the staff is being mistreated and sending it down the line. The lady, Summer, seemed to be the most kind and considerate. Negative experience: DO NOT COME HERE!!! GET A SECOND OPINION! THESE PEOPLE WANT YOUR$$$ I have gone to the dentist all my life, I brush my teeth and floss daily I’m only 23. I went here for the first time and They were looking at my teeth and they said that I had eight cavities and that I needed three root canals. I got one root canal done and it was $3,400. then six months later it was in a lot of pain. I went back and they tried to charge $100 just for the dentist to look at my tooth. So I got another dentist and I went to Blue Ridge dental. I asked them if I had any cavities and they said only one small one and I asked them if I needed any root canals and they said no. PLEASE GET A SECOND OPINION.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been going to Martin Dentistry in Johnson City for 3 years and have had great success. The doctors and staff are caring folks sincerely working to help alleviate pain and address your dental concerns and issues. Most recently I had a filling crack that was repaired but eventually led to an infection over Christmas weekend. I called the “On-Call” line and within 15 mins had someone return my call and had a prescription the same day. I went in and then was recommended for a root canal and crown. I had the procedure done in 1 appointment! Very little pain or discomfort. Martin Dentistry exceeded my expectations! They employ state of the art techniques and equipment with a very knowledgeable staff. I knew, up front, what my portion would cost me. The billing staff is always willing to work with me and my insurance too. Thanks to all at Martin Dentistry - great job!!

Negative experience: I was new to the area and established care with them. I take care of my teeth and I wasn’t overdue for a visit. I saw Dr. Armbrister (well, he spoke to me for half a second) and they took 1000 x-rays and then I was told I needed two crowns and a filling, which seemed weird to me because I had no pain and I had recently seen my previous dentist, who saw nothing wrong. Got the cavity filled and one crown. The crown started hurting right away and I just felt like something was wrong, like they just wanted to make money and treated perfectly normal teeth. I went to a different dentist and showed him the x-rays from Martin Dentistry and he said I did not in fact need any crown. Please stay away!

Fantastic experience: This is a very well run dental office. All of the players inside the office are super nice, from the front office staff to the hygienists to the dentists. They all sync well together. Insurance billing seems to be spot on, a big plus. We are new to this area and had to find a new dentist. At our prior office, the dentist and hygienist are friends, so they are hard to replace. Martin Dentistry is a very good replacement!

After speaking to three different dental offices in the area, I called Martin Dentistry hopeful they would be accepting new patients. Martin Dentistry not only accepted me as a new patient, the team got me on the schedule same day. The entire staff treated me with nothing but respect and made me feel at home. Positive experience: The front desk associate cancelled my confirmed appointment, did not bother to send me any notification. I arrived early for my appointment only to be told I got cancelled. I did not get an explanation nor an apology, instead, she tried to rush making me another appointment on their next availability with no regard to MY time. I work full time and I have a family to work my schedule around. My time is just as valuable as anyone else in the office. I have to make arrangements to get to my appointments. To add insult to injury, I had asked to be scheduled with the same hygienist my husband and I have been seeing for the last three years and of course she scheduled me on the day that she does not work. Apart from this experience, the dental hygienists are very professional and friendly.

Negative experience: New and current patients beware!! Get a second opinion before having any recommended work done here! I recently moved from out of state, so I set up an appt for a cleaning and to establish care with Martin Dentistry of Johnson City (Dr. Armbrister) after searching for someone who could do a cleaning within a reasonable time, and who accepted our insurance. I can say that the only positive part of my experience with them was that the office staff are nice. After only looking at my intraoral photos and XR, before even coming into the room to introduce himself, Dr. Armbrister sent in his dental hygienist to inform me that he feels I need FOUR crowns. First of all, it is incredibly unprofessional and such poor form to have your hygienist come in to deliver this kind of news to a patient (ESPECIALLY one you haven’t even met). Second, I have never had a crown (or had any discussions with my previous dentist remotely hinting that any would be in my near future), and have had regular dental care every ~6 months for years. I immediately had my photos and XR reviewed by 3 different dentists (including my former dentist, who I trust completely and who was able to compare to my previous XR), all of which felt that the treatment plan was incredibly aggressive and recommended against getting any of the work done (and went as far as to say “find a new dentist”). It should be noted that the proposed cost of his plan was going to be around $7,000 in total, and after all of that I re-read some of the negative google reviews and found MULTIPLE similar stories to mine. I cannot NOT recommend this office enough, as it truly feels like a scam. Over-diagnosing for increased profits.

Fantastic experience: This has been my 5th appointment with Martin Dentistry in Johnson City. Dr. Marshall and his staff have done an outstanding job at including me in the decisions made of what work is being done to my teeth and i am.very happy with the progress made. They ensure i am comfortable and communicate with me during whatever procedure is being done. I feel they have my best interests in mind with the work being done. They give me different options and recommendations but allow me to make the final decision of the procedures. I cannot emphasize how professional and friendly they are from the staff at the front desk to the techs and the doctor. Highly recommended! I have had several appointments since the above review was written. Martin dentistry of Johnson City continues to provide outstanding service. I am having some extensive work done and am very happy still with Dr. Marshall, his assistants and the entire office staff. I wouldnt even consider going anywhere else. Aug 28th 2024

Fantastic experience: Great practice with an obviously dialed in group of professionals. Top notch technology for tomorrow's type of dental care. Martin Dentistry of Johnson City did more for me in an hour than most past practices did in weeks or months. They don't mess around...you get in, they solve the problem. Just like that. As an added bonus, they get to know you and listen!

Fantastic experience: I just recently moved into the area and needed to find a new dental office. Having gone to the same dentist and hygienist for 20+ years, I was nervous going in. The moment I entered the office, my nerves were calmed. The front office staff was so friendly and kind. They made the check in process so easy. Then it was time to get to business. Taylor, my dental hygienist, was awesome. She did an incredible job cleaning my teeth. Not a single oops. She was so thorough and gentle. Dr. Marshall was the dentist that I saw and he was so friendly and easy to talk to. They all did a wonderful job and made the whole experience easy and might I dare to say… enjoyable. Negative experience: **Update: They did it again! They cancelled my husband's appointment for two cavity fillings- he made the appointment in person with the hygienist, and they tried to confirm his appointment using a wrong-typed phone number, when he didn't confirm they cancelled his appointment. He took off from work for this. Also, 3 weeks ago they called me to say that "insurance was refusing to pay for the cleanings", when I checked with my insurance, they sent me proof of payment to them in the mail. The office management here is completely inept- I was considering changing my review to be more positive but after these two additional blunders they will not be our family's dentist. I do not recommend them. Original: I'm not sure about this place, I'm thinking of changing dentists as soon as we get our cleanings in. I scheduled a cleaning for my children in January with an appointment for May 1 at 8am and 9am. We show up and they said, "We canceled your appointment, you didn't confirm it." They sent me a text (attached) and nowhere does it say "If you don't confirm, we will cancel your appointment." So they gave us appointments for the next day in the afternoon (I had to take them out of school again). Later I checked my voicemail and a secretary had left a message for me saying "Just to let you know the appointments you have for May 1 were canceled because our practice doesn't see children under age 13." But-- they DO see children ages 13 and under, so our appointments were canceled for no reason, and we were not given an apology for their mix up or for the fact that they never said I *had* to confirm the appointment or else we'd be canceled. We waited to see Martin Dentistry for 5 months because our old dentist had died and our kids were very overdue. I have three more children that need a cleaning, I will take them for a cleaning to Martin Dentistry but I'm not sure we're going to stay. When we finally did go for the cleaning, it took an hour and half for two cleanings and the television was loud- I left with a headache. There's no snacks, bottled water, the wait is long, I'm afraid the desk ladies won't bill us properly, but I'm stuck. My two kids were happy with their cleanings and x-rays, thus the extra star.

Fantastic experience: Taylor was absolutely amazing. I had a cleaning a few days ago, she made me feel very comfortable and went above and beyond. Taylor is extremely professional and was very personable. I will be requesting Taylor for the rest of my cleanings!

Negative experience: Gave my insurance to this business and was informed I was in network. Teeth cleaned and my bill for 400 was paid. Fast forward to the day before my follow up, I get a call saying "oops, we realized your not in network" so I cancel that appointment for a text to come across saying I owe another 610 dollars. Work is great but incompetence amongst the billing personnel will cost you a significant amount.

Fantastic experience: ❤️ Was able to do a last minute root canal for me (a Colonial Heights patient) to prevent an extraction. So happy they could get me in!! Everyone from receptionist to dentist and assistant was professional.

Fantastic experience: If anyone is looking for a wonderful Dentist group, then look no further. Martin Dentistry is amazing. I have had panic attacks and huge fear of being in the dentist chair. They have made the experience less frightening and I no longer have massive fear. .

Fantastic experience: The waiting room and office and treatment rooms clean an$ well organized. Staff from front desk to doctors were friendly, cordial and professional. Had both root canal and crown done and procedures were without problems or hitches. Dr Armbrister kept me up to date as he proceeded with the procedures so I knew exactly what was happening and what came next. I really appreciated that. I much appreciated the attitude of the whole office as they turned a potentially bad visit into an almost enjoyable experience. Fantastic experience: I came in with a chipped tooth and in need of eight fillings. Every time Dr. Marshall has worked on my teeth, everything has come out perfectly and completely pain-free. That said, the last two times I let anyone work on me from this office, it has resulted in discomfort. One mishap was from a failed numbing attempt and a second was from an air bubble in a filling that was extremely painful. Dr. Marshall is very gentle, stops at any sign of discomfort, and will put the patients comfort above all else.

Fantastic experience: I came for a consultation. I was greeted by Abigail who took care of me till Melanie the dental hygienist could see me. Melanie was wonderful. IM always so nervous at the dentist and she was so kind and explained everything to me. I’m not nervous to go back now.

Negative experience: I came for a scheduled appointment today and waited for 45 minutes. I finally had to reschedule because I couldn’t wait any longer and had to get back to work. They did reschedule me for tomorrow (at least I didn’t have to wait another six months for an appointment), but I’m not very happy about having to take more time off work for a second appointment. This isn’t the first time I’ve had a long wait time before a scheduled appointment with this dental practice, which is why I’m leaving a review this time.

Fantastic experience: Referred by a coworker, Martin Dentistry is awesome. Taylor and Dr Armbrister are fantastic. They're clear about what they intend to do and do a great job keeping me informed as they go. Comfort is a big concern of theirs and I greatly appreciate that. The front desk ladies are friendly (and funny). Even when a procedure was scheduled incorrectly, it seemed like the whole office banded together to find a way to make it work the way I needed so that I wouldn't have to reschedule. They're honest about their prices, their work, and even their mistakes. I highly recommend this office!

Fantastic experience: I went from another dentist to this place, they got me in the day after I made my appointment(somebody got cancelled), that’s very satisfying as a new patient. And I’ve got issues with my insurance and suppose to pay $500, but I ended up paid less than $30. And got another treatment at the same day, quick and done a good job. Wonderful staff, nice and caring!

Fantastic experience: There was mixed reviews as with any business there’s always will be. After all I chose the Johnson City office. The lady that sets up new patient appointments was great. She doubled checked my dental insurance and I also went on to my dental insurance website and we verified they was in- network! I was nervous walking into this due to I need a lot of dental work to repair all of my teeth (in which I told them that up front) they paired me with a dentist that can make that happen. The hygienist was awesome . The ladies upfront were awesome as well as this was the first time I was using this insurance they double check my coverage. The dentist he was great! He made me feel comfortable, he came up with a plan in phases to fix everything. And for each phase that if we need to change anything we can. He was very honest. I also loved the fact that he would look at my teeth then look at the X-rays before making a decision on each tooth! I am looking forward to being able to smile again.

Negative experience: Before my appointment, I called the office to confirm that they accepted my dental insurance. However, during my visit, I was charged over $100 for an x-ray and informed that I needed to pay a 20% copay. When I returned with a benefit statement clearly indicating no charge for the x-ray, the office reclassified the charge to a comprehensive exam. This experience has led me to believe that the office is not honest and primarily focused on extracting money from patients.

Fantastic experience: One of the best experiences I’ve ever had at a dentist office before. The Hygienist and Doctor were awesome. I’m very well pleased with such a great and friendly staff.

Negative experience: Practice informed me that they took my insurance, just to tell me at the emergency appointment that it was out of network. Even worse, the practice clearly acted as if I did not have the finances to pay for the services I needed - quickly walking me out after paying $139 for a 5-minute assessment. The office is also extremely discriminatory against non Christian’s - as the only reading material in the waiting room are bibles. Strongly recommended to avoid this place.

Fantastic experience: Martin Dentistry of Johnson City is a great place! The staff is effecient and friendly and went out of their way to make my visit a comfortable experience. They made sure that I understood and agreed with the treatment plan, answering all my questions and concerns with much patience. I'm very confident that I'm in good hands.
