Dr. Shuck and Kristy are both exceptionally knowledgeable, and I always learn something new during our sessions. Their kindness makes my dental experiences truly enjoyable.

Fantastic experience: Normally, a trip to the dentist feels like the beginning of a horror movie: cold lights, buzzing drills, and childhood flashbacks. But this clinic completely changed my mind. From the front desk to the doctors and assistants — everyone is so friendly that you almost want to stop by just for a coffee and a chat. Dr. Shuck is a whole story on his own. Smiling, patient, and with a fantastic sense of humor. At the same time, he’s a true professional: he works thoroughly, quickly, and with such care that even my inner “I’m terrified of dentists” voice said, “Okay, let’s give this a try.” Hygienist Lissi is out of this world. I’ve been getting cleanings for years, in different cities and even countries, but the cleaning she gave me was hands down the best I’ve ever had. So gentle, comfortable, and effective — I actually walked out feeling like my teeth were shining brighter than the lamp in the treatment room. Bottom line: the clinic is amazing, the staff is golden, and the experience was nothing but positive. If there were a rating for “dentistry without fear and pain,” I’d give them 100 out of 10. Highly recommend — even to those who fear dentists more than horror movies.

Fantastic experience: Do you hate the shot at the dentist? Same. I used to dread it… until I met Dr. Shuck! Somehow he makes it completely painless (I was poked three times today and didn’t feel a single pinch). He’s fast, friendly, cracks jokes to make the time fly, and his work is flawless every time. I leave every appointment feeling well cared for and at ease. Thank you, Dr. Shuck!!

Fantastic experience: As new patients, my daughter and I were treated well from start to finish! I did not feel like a stranger. All staff were friendly, thorough, and knowledgeable. Not only were they kind to us, but also to one another. We were seen on time for our appointments. The technology was current. The physical space was clean and inviting. The dentist and hygienist provided us with what we needed to make informed decisions regarding future care. UPDATE: I had to have an old root canal removed today. Yet again, everyone was wonderful. The attentiveness, patience. skill, and compassion demonstrated by everyone involved was deeply appreciated.

Both docs have great personalities and are very personable. They also listen to the patient which I have found to be in short supply in the dental field. Fantastic experience: 5 years later and they are still the best! Had a molar filling from 30 years ago break down, so another crown was needed. This was a one-visit-fix! Digital measurements were taken, the molar was prepped to be a post for the new crown, and the new crown was fabricated in the office, placed and ready to go. No off adjust on, off adjust back on, all done in one seamless event. Dr. Dorfman and assist were kind, gentle, and responsive. Additional staff in the office and everyone was friendly, smiling, and the vibe was focused on taking care of people. Highly recommend! Terrible tooth/jaw pain increasing over a couple of days. The folks here got me an appointment within 24 hours. At the appointment, Dr. Dorfman and Jenny methodically went through all the potential causes, settled on the least invasive of checking/adjusting a crown, and proceeded to do so. Very gentle handling. I left with a primary plan, and a secondary plan. Great service!

Fantastic experience: I’ve been going here for maybe 15 years now, and these people are always ready to help you in an emergency. The reason I started going here was because they can give you a crown the same day that you come into the office with their advanced 3-D printer. I had a cleaning yesterday with Kristy and then an examination by Dr. Dorfman. I always leave knowing that they have given me thorough exam.

Fantastic experience: My regular hygienist was not available and I was seen by Sarah or (Sara) who subbed for Melissa. I must say Melissa is awesome and I lost nothing with Sarah. They both were very respectful understanding that I did not exercise the best dental hygiene in my youth. Dr. Dorfman is an outstanding dentist who takes his time in explaining each procedure. The entire office is very friendly and considerate.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been a patient here my entire life, and I’m so grateful for the fabulous dental care The Art of Dentistry provides! Today, Dr. Shuck filled my first (and hopefully only) cavity. It was 100% painless and so quick! Everything turned out perfectly even though I started involuntarily swallowing for no reason except that I swallowed once and then panicked that I had messed everything up and then proceeded to apologize which also caused a bit of unhelpful intraprocedural movement. Dr. Shuck was faster than my unintentional attempts at disaster, and my tooth looks and feels perfect! I cannot even see the filling! Everybody here is awesome, and I’m so very thankful for this amazing team!

Fantastic experience: This is by far the best dental experience I have ever had. The hygenist was pleasant and thorough when I got my cleaning. Then I had to get two caps and two filling redone. I never had caps or any other extensive dental work. I have had two caps, done, and two fillings redone over the past month. The drilling was quick, the caps are perfect, and so are the fillings. Recovery is quick and painless as well. I never even felt the needle go in for numbing. During the break waiting for the cap to be made, I fell asleep in the dental chair, that is how relaxing this place is. For a dental visit, it was the best I have ever experienced. I recommend them 100%!!!

Fantastic experience: I’ve been coming here for years…Kristy is a great and personable hygienist and Dr. Dorfman is an excellent dentist when I have needed the occasional filling. I also did Invisalign through here and it was an easy experience and all my questions were answered.

Fantastic experience: Care provided is always the best. The entire team makes you feel important. The office is convenient to my neighborhood which is a plus.

Negative experience: About three months ago, I went to The Art of Dentistry for a general check-up. After the evaluation, they scheduled a follow-up appointment for about three months later and, taking my insurance into account, provided me with three quotes, all for fillings. A week before my appointment, they informed me that they work out of network with my insurance and demanded a much higher amount, also stating that I owed $242 from the initial check-up. I explained that the cost was too high for me to afford and expressed that we had been waiting for this appointment for three months. I requested some flexibility regarding the price, but they refused. If there was a mistake, it wasn’t mine, but I’m the one left in a difficult situation. What’s upsetting is that the error was entirely on their end, but they made no effort to make up for it. All they said was, “We’re sorry.”

Negative experience: Hello, I scheduled an appointment at The Art of Dentistry for my routine check-up and other procedures. After the initial examination, they scheduled my next appointment for about three months later to address the necessary treatments. Even though this was a long wait and I experienced severe toothaches during this period, I patiently waited for my appointment day. When the day finally arrived and I was about to leave for my appointment, it was just one hour ago, we received a call from The Art of Dentistry. They informed me that they work with my insurance out of network and requested the full cost of their services, which was not an acceptable amount. The price was at least 3-4 times higher than what they had previously mentioned. They essentially kept me waiting for about three months, and as if that wasn’t enough, they demanded additional payments. They also billed me for the previous examination. I tried to negotiate because I really needed treatment but they declined although they put me in a difficult situation due to their own mistake.

Fantastic experience: I am adding to my original review below… thank you Mel for always squeezing me in for dental emergencies and thank you Lissie for being an awesome hygienist! My daughter has been going to Abby for many years (see below). This is the only practice we trust! I would highly recommend Dr. Darren Dorfman and his awesome team of hygienists (thank you, Abby!) and support staff for their outstanding dental care and customer service!

Fantastic experience: This was the best experience I’ve ever had at a dentist office. The team is so warm and welcoming! I had problems with bleeding gums and just as they said, the bleeding stopped after I went to them and they took such great care of me during my cleaning. I also had a small gap in my bottom teeth that was bugging me and it went away two weeks later because my gums were so healthy from the cleaning. I am just so impressed! I have healthier gums,cleaner,whiter teeth and by far felt the most amazing I’ve ever felt leaving the dentist office! I highly recommend them

Fantastic experience: My recent visit was for an old crown that had fallen off. I wasn’t in any pain, so when I booked the appointment I told them I was ok with the next available which was in December, they offered to call if there were any cancellations. The next morning they called to offer an appointment that day at 2:00. I agreed and as always everything went perfectly from the phone calls to the reception, the procedure ( Dr. Dorfman and his assistant are thorough and want to insure you are comfortable) to the check out. I have been a patient of Dr. Dorfman’s since 2017 and have never had a bad experience. If you are looking for a new dentist, don’t hesitate to contact them, the practice is top notch all the way around. Thank you Art of Dentistry you all are awesome!!!

They employ the latest technology, and even fabricate and install the crown on the same day of the procedure. Drs. Fantastic experience: I have been going to The Art of Dentistry for a few years now and let me tell you, in my 42 years on this earth, I have never had a better dental care team. For every appointment, whether it's a cleaning, root canal, filing, or just a consult, they have made me feel welcome and comfortable. And for each procedure I have never had any issues. They are awesome!

Fantastic experience: This is going to be LONG! My PCP found that I had an infection due to a toothache that was going on for about a month, so I was scheduled in for an ASAP dental appointment. I was devastated knowing that my little tiny tooth in the front that was causing me so much pain was cracked in 2 places causing me to have an infection in my gums. Let me tell you when Dr. Dorfman and his Assistant Chloe gave this 41 year old momma the news that my tooth couldn't be saved, they saw me cry like a big ol' baby. It was a hard pill to swallow. I was scared and I was a wreck but they took care of me emotionally! Even his coordinator Lee, was so kind to allow me to vent on over the phone, she was so patient with me and took the time to explain things to me so I wouldn't be so scared. It put me in a better spot mentally. Fast forward, I just got my tooth pulled on July 23rd, surgery went smoothly and I actually didn't cry at all. There was a mishap with my flipper/partial and yes I was frustrated but they went above and beyond to make sure I would have my smile again until I get my partial & implant done! Chris, was amazing helping put my temp retainer in, to adjusting it and she also made sure to fix my night guard properly bc I still grind at night like crazy. ‍♀️ Another thing, all of the front desk staff are so kind and welcoming, but my girl Lee is the BEST idk but God surely made her such a patient person. She made me feel at ease Everytime we spoke! And sweet Chloe, girlfriend although I wasn't on the beach that day, you made me feel so comfortable! Dr Dorfman, YOU ARE THE MAN!!! When I tell I told him I put my trust in him, I literally put my whole trust in him and he rocked! He took great care of me from the beginning. He tried to be as gentle as possible, there was a lot of infection in there, and he explained post-op care in laymen's terms for me to understand. He answered every question I had and he made sure to rush my temp retainer so I would have my smile back! We even joked around because that's my only coping mechanism. I said Lord Jesus here he comes! And he said "Lord Jesus"! It was hilarious and made me feel comfortable! Finally, it's going to be a long journey since I'm getting a tooth implant but I am so glad my journey is with this crew!!! They are amazing!!! Here's my before and after! They did an amazing job on my temporary retainer bc NO ONE noticed that my tooth is actually gone! I felt extremely confident and happy. I can't wait to get my tooth Implant, because I know they will do an amazing job!!!

Fantastic experience: This is the best dentistry ever! Every time I walk up in this place, it is quiet and calm, and it feels like the lil guys in my mouth are in heaven! I've never gone to any other dentist, and I never will. No one can outdo the fantastic staff or the amazing service provided to your teeth. Fantastic experience: We have been going to The Art of Dentistry for 40 years. This includes myself, husband, son and father. Dr. Abbey Horowitz took care of us until he retired. The practice has been cultivated into a wonderful caring team from the office staff to the hygienists with Dr. Darren Dorfman and Dr. Ryan Shuck at the helm. I am so thrilled to now have straight teeth from a 3-1/2 year Invisalign plan! This shows the perseverance and compassion of this practice in giving their patients the best possible care and outcomes. My husband's plan, though, only took a year! Yesterday, my Steve and I just had our cleanings with Nancy and Abbey, both excellent hygienists, very caring and professional. We continue to look forward to seeing Dr. Dorfman and the rest of the team for all our dental needs!

Fantastic experience: I have never had a fear of going to the dentist, however the last office I visited really did a number on me both physically and mentally. In search of another new office, I came across The Art of Dentistry, and there is no looking back. The front office staff was warm and welcoming and made the check in process a breeze. All of the hygienists and techs I have had the pleasure of working with so far have been so wonderful; they are just as knowledgable as the dentists, they are welcoming, patient, understanding, flexible, and so much more. I also had the pleasure of working with Dr. Shuck for an intake exam, cleaning, filling and crown. He ensured my comfort the entire time and continued to remind me that during my appointment, I was in control of when to take breaks and such. He regularly checked in, added a dash of humor throughout the appointment, and really assisted overall in overcoming any nerves that came up. I am so blessed to now be a patient of Dr. Shuck and his team and look forward to the future of my dental health!

Fantastic experience: I have loved every experience I have had at The Art of Dentistry! Dr. Shuck did an amazing exam and found the issue right away. Positive experience: Dorfman's dental work was fine. Support staff is flatly rude. Prices are high (high rent area). I am grateful for quick attn to emergency situation. I understand staffing crisis is nationwide & I am not insulted by rude counter help. Thus, 4 stars. TYVM.

Fantastic experience: I have been a patient of this dental office for over 20 years. They are the absolute best! Dr. Horwitz is very professional, yet personable and makes each visit fun. Melissa (Lissy) has been my dental hygienist for years. She's awesome as well. I highly recommend this dental practice! Ramona 5/14/24 Visit - I still highly recommend this dental practice, but I have two suggestions. Please remove the notice requesting that patients not inquire or comment about about the death of Dr. Horwitz. It made me sad to be reminded of his death when I arrived for my appointment on Tuesday. If someone inquires or comments, perhaps that person could be told that inquiries or comments make the staff sad or uncomfortable, rather than signs being posted to that effect. My second suggestion is that patients not be referred to by their first names, unless they have requested it. I did not like the dentist doing so. You're still the best!

Negative experience: This office has issues explaining the word "Estimates" How 'bout the word Itemize, so A Patient can see what they're about to pay for, after a major procedure! I liked them at first, but now I can only shake my head and say the following...I'm glad you didn't take My money from me! Glad you cancelled me off your Books! HA! They never submitted anything to my insurance Co. I don't pay hidden office fees either. Bye poor customer service/management. No stars!

Fantastic experience: I’ve had the pleasure of being a patient with The Art of Dentistry for approximately 39 years and not once have I ever questioned or worried about the care that I was receiving. It’s the one place that I go where piece of mind goes hand-in-hand with the procedure or cleaning. I can say enthusiastically without a doubt, The Art of Dentistry will be my dentist as long as I have teeth. I wouldn’t trust anyone else the way I trust them. PERIOD.

Fantastic experience: Went here at the recommendation of family members. Was looking for a new dentists’ office and was very pleased with my experience. I requested an appointment online and someone called to schedule the next day, and they were able to fit me in within the month. Most places near me were/are booked out 3+ months. My hygienist and dentist were wonderful, along with everyone else I encountered in the office. They were very thorough, and efficient, and explained everything to me, unlike other offices I’ve gone to in the past. They aren’t even in network with my insurance, but I will continue to go to this practice just because of the great service I received there. If anyone I know is looking for a new dental practice, I will be recommending The Art of Dentistry, they were great.

Fantastic experience: When I was a kid, I dreaded going to the dentist. I've been going to "The Art of Dentistry" for a decade now, and, while I must admit I don't look forward to it, I certainly don't dread it! Most of my teeth demonstrate their "art" in dentistry. Fantastic experience: I have been going to Art of Dentistry over 2 decades. Best practice in all of Tidewater. The staff (dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, and business office) is the best. Contrary to the stereotypical fears people have on going to the dentist, I look forward to the visits, but not like Bill Murray in "Little Shop of Horrors".

Jennifer Acker is a fabulous dental hygienist - she's very effective while causing no pain during cleanings, and she's so kind and enjoyable to spend time with. Dr. Dorfman is my favorite dentist ever; kind and trustworthy, I know that he's got my best interest in mind and he doesn't recommend unnecessary procedures. Our whole extended family comes to this office and I 100% recommend the team at The Art of Dentistry.

Fantastic experience: Going to my appointment on Thursday at The Art of Dentistry l was very nervous and had no sleep for two days.( getting two teeth removed) Dr. Dorfman and his nurse made me feel very relaxed and treated me just like I was their family. Fantastic experience: I have had my teeth clean there and then I needed to have a crown so this was only the second time I saw Dr. Dorfman. He was amazing they were on time it was completely painless. They made sure that I wasn’t uncomfortable at any time and I was completely amazed and I am a nervous wreck going to a dentist and this was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had a highly recommend him

Fantastic experience: Had a dental issue, called 1st thing on a Monday. Was advised to come right in. I was seen promptly, X-ray and pictures - I needed a crown. Was given my out of pocket with insurance. Walked out 2 hours later with beautiful new crown and no pain! Dr. Dorfman and his team are top notch! Excellent patient care!

Everything from the wait time, experience of the dental assistants/doctor to the equipment and overall cleanliness of the office was a very good experience. Fantastic experience: I have never had an unpleasant experience. I mean, it is a dentist office but it’s not altogether unpleasant. The staff is nice and accommodating. My dentist and hygienists are knowledgeable and gentle. The place is up-to-date and runs smoothly, like a well-oiled machine. I’ll put it this way, I live in FRANKLIN and I make the drive so that should tell you what I think.

Thirty years of never being able to stay numb during a procedure, Dr Shuck made sure I was completely comfortable during the entire procedure. Fantastic experience: Jennifer is so wonderful, and my mouth always feels amazing when I leave! I haven't had to have any dental work since I came to their practice (knock on wood), so I haven't had much time with Dr. Dorfman other than his great chairside manner after cleanings.

Fantastic experience: My hygienist was not available, however, Jennifer did an excellent job, was very friendly, and made me feel quite comfortable. Dr. Ryan Shuck inspected my teeth and gave a review on what needed to be done in the future. Thankful he did not pressure me regarding crowns but gently advised me that I need a couple. He is absolutely wonderful and I really like and appreciate him, since losing Dr Horiwitz, (my dentist for 40 years) to retirement.

The hygienists, dentists, and receptionists have always been incredibly kind. Any questions I have are always answered and they even follow up at my next visit to ensure my questions are answered. And you are treated with respect and a caring attitude from both the professional staff and office personnel. Fantastic experience: I'm very happy with my experiences. My hygienist is gentle while thorough. I've been fortunate not to need anything major done, but when I do, I completely trust in the competency of both Dr. Horwitz & Dr. Dorfman. One of the reasons I moved to this practice was tiring of seeing a dentist that was constantly trying to "find" work that 'needed' to be done. This practice doesn't operate that way.

Wonderful experience from calling for an appointment and then check in- very friendly, informative and at front desk was met with a smiling face. Jenny as my Hygienist was a great experience, She explained EVERYTHING and her technique was perfect! Dr. Dorfman-He was through and patient- did not seem to be rushed. He explained everything. The biggest thing that impressed me was that I was not being sold. My last experience with a dentist was that everytime I came in I was being sold on product or services.
