Fantastic experience: We’ve gone to Dr. Kautz for several years now (she recently changed her name from Heilman) and always appreciate her professional and friendly attitude and excellent dentistry. All the Family Dental staff members are also professional, attentive, and take the time to explain everything thoroughly, whether it’s a regular cleaning or the billing process. We appreciate the attentive service, and appointments start on time!

Fantastic experience: Family Dental of Thornton is, perhaps, the most professional, knowledgeable and most compassionate dental office i have ever been to in my 77 years. In addition, they go out of their way to serve their patients almost immediately for any emergencies that their patients may develop. They are of extremely high integrity and I trust them totally about any recommendations they have ever suggested for my dental needs.

Negative experience: Didn't know why I pd for a preventative visit. Got an explanation after. Didn't know a prior one time treatment would be considered an ongoing diag. moving forward. It was explained as an option. Therefore because of, preventative visits are not covered even though I was told no issues moving forward? Also didn't appreciate this conversation took place where people in lobby could hear because the staff member was loud.

Negative experience: Found the staff here is not properly trained. Will overbill. Sort by 1 star reviews. No medical practice should have this many (~scary~) & then they bury them… Hopefully something changes over there because the Doctors deserve better for their time and practice.

Negative experience: BEWARE! I had the worst medical experience of my life here. Not once but multiple times. The young woman in charge of scheduling is incompetent, rude & almost had me calling the police. She changed my appointment to an emergency appointment and did not tell me or confirm with anyone. Because of this I came in for the wrong appointment and they wouldn’t treat me. I had to reschedule & because of her mistake, they took $100 off. Today - for the rescheduled appointment - I had one of the doctors perform my procedure on the wrong side of my mouth! 3 huge shots and even started cleaning - on the wrong side. This is after I made note that the previous hygienist had already done most of the work for today and that the left side should be quick. After she realized her mistake - The doctor told me I wouldn’t be charged at all - however the girl at billing tried to charge me something anyway! She then told me I didn’t understand my treatment plan and the $100 off previously was for being a difficult patient and not for her mistake. At this point I now have had my whole wrong side numbed; been told I wouldn’t have to pay, yet billing says I do - & then told by billing that her pervious mistake “never happened” and I got $100 off for being difficult? .. This is enough to frustrate a Nun. Now, still - I was unable to respond without being cut off or told I was speaking too loud. Maybe it was all the novocaine shots I didn’t need? Or the fact that billing was now gaslighting the truth about the $100 off. Whoever owns this practice needs to do something. I will be writing reviews everywhere possible until this woman is dealt with. Absolutely absurd behavior. Then you have Susan saying they can’t give me my medical info - This well verges on mal-practice. Then I contacted my lawyer & I asked for my medical records again - Susan initially lied and said they can’t give them to me. When I said this was illegal & I contact my lawyer - she found the release form. This wasn’t before Susan said I should “still have to pay because it like renting a car” - is this the type of people you trust running this office? The main woman with glasses was the only one who showed any compassion at the front desk. I had to ask the billing girl to stop speaking to me because I felt how heated it was getting and no one was stepping in. Just because I am a man that’s 6.4 doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be able to express the negligent and potentially illegal acts that occurred today. Thanks to Shavauns escalation of the situation and Susan going against basic HIPAA - I will be filing with BBB as well as the Colorado Dental Board. The hygienist had this completely under control until Shavauns attitude at billing was brought in. That’s the real blame here for all these issues. She should not be allowed to speak to patients. Reading through your reviews - I’m not the only one who feels this way. I promise this woman is hurting your business. If you have cameras in there I urge you to watch what happened rather than listen to the lies these women continue to spew. I sincerely doubt you will get the truth — as they were so quick to lie about multiple issues today. The hygienist made a terrible mistake and one nasty billing employee blew it all up. There’s a dentist on every corner of this block. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE patients!

Fantastic experience: After 20 years of negative dental experiences through the military, living overseas, and using cheaper options...I finally found a home at Family dental. Dr. Heilman and her team are all amazing. Whether you are getting a cleaning with Janelle or Mercedes, or getting more invasive work with the dental team (too many names to remember)--you are in great hands. They use state of the art equipment and work hard to keep you comfortable with whatever you need during your visit. The front desk staff is the best too, always willing to work to make your life less stressful. All paperwork, billing and payments have been absolutely stress free. Plus, they can always work with you when needed. Family Dental has a great family atmosphere full of smiles and laughter. Thanks for making me feel like family.

Negative experience: After years of going here, there have been multiple situations where I have shown up for my appointment to be told that something that was done on a previous visit was actually not covered under insurance and would need to be paid out of pocket after the fact. This last straw was my next appointment that was supposed to happen. I get a text a day before my appointment from the front desk stating that my insurance is no longer active. After contacting my insurance, they assured me that I was still covered and actually confirmed that the provider requested insurance info a week prior and that they sent it over to them. It's unfortunate because the service that I've received for cleanings or fillings has always been great but the front desk needs training or something because it really seems like they don't know what going on with insurance and billing. With how many Dental providers are in the area, it's just not worth this hassle or surprise bills every time I have an appointment, and looking at other reviews, this doesn't seem like an isolated incident and isn't getting better.

Negative experience: The hygienist is realllyyyy pushy. I came in after leaving another dentist who said I only needed a cleaning. My dentist didn’t have availability so I called around and this clinic had an opening for a cleaning. I emailed my X-rays to the front office and the hygienist said she was going to re-do a bite wing or two, then she ended up re-doing my entire X-rays even though they were just done two hours prior. Her reason? “Your X-rays didn’t have a date on them”. This could’ve easily been verified because they were just done! After looking at my teeth, the hygienist then ran my X-rays through an Ai software and wow! Magically I needed 4 fillings too! She said I also needed several procedures including a deep clean, with a cash price of $3,700 for those services. I also felt like she was being patronizing and talking to me as if I were a child. The dentist was in the room for barely a few minutes. After refusing to clean my teeth because I needed thousands of dollars worth of work, the hygienist offered a mouth cancer screening I said no. She already had the screening wand in her hand and aggressively talked me into it since she wasn’t able to clean my teeth. It felt like my consent did not matter. I’m sure this clinic is good if you follow their treatment plan because they were thorough and kind, but the sales felt pushy and dismissive. I told them what I needed (a cleaning) and they went on a tangent that I didn’t ask for. My normal dentist did not note the need for any deep cleaning. I didn’t ask for new X-rays or a cancer screening either. I felt like they just wanted me in there with the cleaning special to get more sales and up charge insurance whenever necessary.

Negative experience: Wow I can’t believe how the doctor treats her assistant its actually pretty sad, I had my crown done with Dr Kathol and while she seems to be nice she most certainly wasn’t with her assistant I felt so sad for her. She didn’t spend much time with me, rather had the assistant do most of the work which makes me upset.. I also feel like they try to up sale you almost even when I received a cleaning there. This office feels very much like a place where they are all about money even the way the doctor speaks sounds like she’s all about money.. I do NOT recommend this place at all. My tooth still hurts even after she touched it and never hurt before I would not recommend my friends or family. Honestly, this place is trash.

Fantastic experience: I love Family Dental! Mercedes is the best, she always makes sure I’m comfortable when doing my cleanings. I have a lot dental anxiety from previous dentists but everyone at family dental, from the drs and dental hygienists to the office staff have always been so great in the three years I’ve been going there. I’ve even started bringing my kids because they are more comfortable here than the other pediatric offices in the area. I would highly recommend this office to anyone looking for great care!

From the moment I walked into the office, I felt completely safe, welcomed, and genuinely cared for.. not just as a patient, but as a person. The entire office has such a comforting atmosphere, and every staff member I encountered took the time to connect on a personal level. Dr. Kathol herself is incredibly personable and down to earth. She took the time to educate me thoroughly about everything we discussed—whether it was treatment options, dental health maintenance, or the reasoning behind specific procedures. What stood out most was how therapeutic her approach was. I also appreciated how thoughtful she was when it came to planning my treatment. She took into account both the time sensitivity of what needed to be addressed and was also very respectful of the financial aspect. Negative experience: The sad thing is, I actually like the people at this office and in the practice. They are nice humans. For that reason they at least get two stars but here is my experience. I had a really big set of dental work required once the COVID pandemic was over. Dr. Kathol was so incredibly kind about everything. And then came a particularly difficult crown. I have a small mouth. I can barely get a toothbrush between my back molars and my cheek. The dental tech and Dr. Kathol had me in the chair for 4 hours. No bathroom break, and a large amount of time of both of them insisting they could get their new fangled device to do images for the permanent crown done. I didn’t want to complain at the time and I learned my lesson on that one, complain if you need to. My jaw and mouth hurt for a few weeks after and I had a bit of anxiety about going back and actually cried. I I told Dr. Kathol and she was incredibly receptive to the criticism. I pointed out I felt she and the dental tech were so convinced they COULD get the images they let their pride take over and didn’t truly consider me, the patient. Since that instance I had grown to feel more comfortable with them again, until today. My daughter is nervous about shots and needed two cavities filled. She has had cavities done there before and was fine. Then she had a very stubborn tooth that wouldn’t come out and Dr. Kathol was kind enough to come in during an exam and pluck it out. My daughter was freaked out but made it through. Knowing her unease, Dr. Kathol said we could try a pediatric dentist or stay with them for these fillings. She gave me the referral, but after consideration, my husband, daughter, and I felt it would be better to stay with someone she already knew. So I scheduled her an appointment, with NO issues for September 11. Unfortunately, my daughter got strep throat so we had to cancel the appointment at that time. Reception immediately called me back to let me know Dr. Kathol would be taking some time off so we should get my daughter scheduled for a time before that occurred so we didn’t have trouble finding an appointment. That appointment was for today. When we got to the office for the appointment my daughter was slightly nervous about, they didn’t have record of the appointment. So they checked to see if they could get her in. They said Dr. Kathol was in the office. They then checked with dental techs who said we had been referred out. So they reviewed my daughter’s chart to see what they thought. What seems to be VERY convenient timing for them, they came to talk to us in the waiting room and said they could not do it as she had been referred out. They dental tech was nice and I understand she was delivering the message but she also didn’t want to hear that Dr. Kathol herself had said we had a choice. I also mentioned we had NO issue scheduling the September appointment. She kept saying we needed to go to the pediatric dentist. I asked to speak to Dr. Kathol and was informed “she just left the office for the day.” Well, you have also lost the business of my entire family. And, Dr. Kathol, I’m sorry, we like you, but treatment like this makes us feel less like patients you care about and more like dollar amounts on a paycheck. I know you can do better and I hope you can learn more lessons from this as a practice.

So I had another visit with Dr. Heilman and her DA Karla, another great visit. Everyone is so upbeat and friendly, I totally would recommend Family Dental of Thornton! Had another visit with Dr Kautz, I had to get a root canal and a buildup done and a crown from another office that did not want to do it because they said the canals were too small Dr Kautz said she would try to save the tooth and she did very professionally and very comfortably My visit went well her assistant Cindy also was awesome I will continue to see Dr Kautz for my future dental work. If you have any issues you should try her she's really good she works Monday Tuesday and Wednesdays 12-hour shift so please try her out and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Thank you Dr Kautz. I also want to add that the girls that are up in the front the BAs were very professional and very helpful.

Fantastic experience: I needed some urgent work done on my front teeth and Family Dental of Thornton had an immediate opening which I gladly took and am so happy I did. The staff was very friendly and Susan the dental assistant was incredible! I received the best care! Thank you!

Negative experience: So I don 't often write reviews, but wanted to save others the hassle of dealing with this office. First, the good, everyone in the office is friendly and cordial. However, everything else is where the problems are found. Every single appointment had an issue, from running late, untrained technicians, or even once had to go back to the surgeon because something got broken during my dental visit. It became a running joke of what could possibly go wrong this time. The most recent is a billing issue that has taken 12+ months to resolve, as there is no business or office manager to work with, so each time I have to explain all over again. Basically you have to play middleman with your insurance and spell out what the office needs to do to get any traction. My advice, save your self a headache, there are plenty of other dental offices in the area. TLDR: Friendly staff, bad business practices.

Negative experience: I’m slow to give these kind of reviews. Dr Kathol was always very kind and informative. I’ve been going here for 3 years. Multiple times I’ve been miss quoted on the phone for what my portion would be and what insurance would cover. Today I was told $75 and then showed up to hear $586. I understand the insurance situation isn’t their problem with what they cover but patient communication is everything. I’m leaving this review in hopes it’s read and things change. It isn’t fair to patients. I’m finding a new dentist not due to how I was treated by my dental assistances and dentist, but due to the misinformation I was given time after time by the front desk.

Negative experience: There were a few times where I did my cleaning, and the girl just does the fluoride treatment without asking me. I believe one of them is Mercedes. I am not stupid. I know you’re doing it and it cost money and I’ve told you before that I don’t want it. Very unprofessional. The fact that this was done twice or three times to me, I’m switching somewhere.

Fantastic experience: Extremely thorough in their cleaning and explanation of your oral health. Recommended treatments and techniques to keep the health and longevity of your teeth at its best. My insurance also was being problematic with some of my coverage and they were extremely helpful in dealing with my insurance, explaining policies to me and making sure that I walked away taken care of. Also want to note they were able to get me in for a cleaning within a day which is something I’ve found difficult to do at other dental & healthcare facilities. Overall, great staff, service and customer care. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a solid dental care team to check them out!

Positive experience: My appointment was at 8:40 a.m. I finally was able to get into the cleaning chair at 9:05 a.m. obviously my teeth were very clean because it seemed to be a whip bam thank you ma'am cleaning job I didn't think it was a very thorough job but apparently they had another client after me that they had to squeeze in it's possible that I may end up looking for another dentist office this office seems to be way way too busy for me.

Fantastic experience: For a month and a half, I had a slowly growing pain from a broken tooth. It was impossible to eat without food getting stuck inside it. I thought it was over me lol When I called, they were able to get me In, right away. Dr. Kathol was able to save my tooth via a Root canal. Contrary to the Fears that alot of people have about this procedure, I was very pleased with Mine and Enjoyed every minute, as the Dr. and her Assistant, Bree, Kept me informed and educated through each stage so much so that I have gained Interest in receiving an education in Dentistry. Not to mention, the check In and Check out process with Cat and her front desk, was the quickest and most efficient I have ever seen. I felt immediately, like I was in Good Good hands. To anyone considering Dental help, no matter what it may be, this is your Sign to choose; Family Dental of Thornton. They Will Serve you Well 10/10.

Negative experience: I had a really bad experience here 7/23/25. I had to come in for a filling on 7/22/25. They numbed the area and did the filling quite quickly. They unfortunately lacerated my cheek in 2 spots with the drill but I didn't feel it because of the numbing agent. Anyway, the filling was too raised and my bite wasn't properly aligning so I had to return on 7/23/25 for them to correct. They used this like paper thing to try and determine where the high points were and started grinding on the filling and my teeth. I kept telling her that something wasn't right and my bite was still wrong. After the 3rd attempted grinding on my teeth she radioed the dentist and she said do an X-ray because there is probably a void (whatever that means.) they did the x-ray and no void. She grinded again and then decided to call the dentist in after I insisted something wasn't right. The dentist came in and she was incredibly rude and pushy. I told her that I'm feeling my top tooth hit the filling and she abruptly inserted a harsh statement of "That's not possible we did the filling on the bottom!" I dunno, in my opinion the filling felt raised, and therefor the filling needed to be grinded back down so my top tooth fit properly but instead they grinded my teeth. The dentist told me to point to the tooth that is the problem. I could only feel the problem when I bite down. So I pointed at the general spot (I have big fingers) and she had me point at the spot again which wasn't the exact precise location and she harshly proclaimed "Now your not even pointing to the same spot!" she grinded again and this time she took out quite a bit. It solved the problem of me biting the filling but created a new issue. They grinded away so much of my molars that there is now a gap between my teeth. My teeth no longer make contact on the left side of my mouth and do on the right side. I tried to tell them no, this isn't right my bite is wrong on the left side. They told me "Well it looks like you never had much work done on your teeth so it's going to feel a little bit weird." which was the most brain dead comment imaginable. Iv had a filling before and iv also had extensive orthodontic work done as seen by the permeant retainer that's welded in my mouth. The same mouth of the teeth they just messed up. To add insult to injury the dentist said she could prescribe me something to help the laceration heal. So something I would have to pay for at the pharmacy for their mess up. I left to head back to work and felt so dismissed and attacked by the whole ordeal that I cried the entire drive back. Now I am reminded every time I bite or clench my jaw. I now need to find another dentist or possibly even go to an orthodontist to asses the damage they caused. 3 of my family members go to this dentist and they used to be quite good. But in the last year all 3 of my family members have had to return for some sort of correction which is a reflection of their of poor quality.

Negative experience: This was, without question, the worst dental cleaning experience I’ve ever had, and I will be taking my family elsewhere. I’ve been going to the dentist and having routine check-ups, and cleanings for over 30 years now. While I don’t claim to have perfect dental hygiene, I brush regularly, and floss about 75%-80% of the time between visits. I take my oral health seriously, which is why this experience was not only painful but felt condescending and unprofessional. During the cleaning, the hygienist used what I believe was an ultrasonic scaler. At one point, it felt like the scaler grabbed and either tore, lacerated, ripped, or punctured part of my gum. I now have some visible damage in the area, which continues to have some discomfort. My lower front teeth are painful and unusually sensitive. I have also been in the military, so I’m no stranger to discomfort and have a high tolerance for pain, but I had to speak up and say that it hurt. Even then, the cleaning continued. The hygienist later acknowledged that the tip that they were using was too large and switched to a smaller one—but by that point, the damage had already been done, and still continued to be painful throughout the procedure. When I told the hygienist that it hurt, I was told that most patients prefer the hand tools, but since I didn’t say anything, the ultrasonic tool was used by default. That kind of assumption, without checking in, felt careless and dismissive. The hygienist also made several concerning comments like, “If I feel it, I’m going to get it,” and, “I’m just diligent,” which felt more aggressive than attentive. Water sprayed everywhere during the procedure—down my face and out of my mouth, down into my ear, and back of my neck. I had to stop multiple times to wipe it away, and all I got in return was a casual, “Oh, My bad.” To make matters worse, the hygienist informed me after the cleaning that they had forgotten to take my blood pressure beforehand—a basic and important step. When it was finally taken, it read unusually high for me and likely elevated due to the pain and stress I had just experienced. Finally, I was told that I don’t floss “hard or deep enough.” After everything that had happened, that remark felt dismissive and tone-deaf, especially given how much care I already put into my dental hygiene. This visit left me in pain and seriously concerned about the quality of care being provided. I have visible gum damage, and lingering discomfort. I cannot in good conscience recommend this office, and my family and I will not be returning.

Fantastic experience: Where to begin. I’m simply blown away by the level of professionalism and friendliness of the entire staff at Family Dental of Thornton. I’ve been to many a dentist in my day, and I’ve never left on such a natural high as I did today at FDT. A particular shoutout is due for the hygienist Parzis, whose gentle and positive nature made me feel right at home in the chair. Then came Dr. Kathol- a beaming light of pure dental talent. Dr Kathol is a rising star in the industry and I cannot recommend her highly enough. She was able to identify the start of a cavity with an X Ray that the common dentist would fail to even recognize as abnormal. She is la creme de la creme of dentists. I appreciated that this office showed me all x rays and images, and had very high tech such as AI and inner mouth photography. The staff left me with a smile on face, a souvenir bag in hand, and a new friendship blossoming between us. Thank you FDT, can’t wait to come back! (never thought I’d say that about a dentist!)

Fantastic experience: My first time at this place, went for teeth cleaning. Jannelle Raley was my dental hygienist, and she was very gentle and thorough. Her soft approach and deep knowledge (some personal) stood out and made the cleaning a great experience. I must say, it's rare to feel comfortable for me in the chair and it was all thanks to Jannelle (Double N and double L, spelled French Way). By the way she is not only a master hygienist, but also a super DIYer, German Sheperd mama and a famous content creator on YouTube (Check out Aspire the Simple Life channel). Just putting it out there, if you are in Thornton and need teeth cleaned, go see Jannelle Raley - she is knowledgeable, attentive and gentle and simply the best! Another shout-out to Dr. Kautz, she was patient and knowledgeable. Not much else to add - she was great! Also, she recently got married, so if you see her, don't forget to say congratulations!

Negative experience: I didn't have any pain I went in for a tooth that chipped. I was told I need a root canal and a couple filings all on the same side of my face. Now over a month later my gums still hurt and I now on that one side i am sensitive to hot and cold it hurts. They sent me to a gums place they said it looks fine swelling. I go back for the crown and then the dentist said it is rare but I could have had s reaction to the temp tooth. Well now it's been more then two weeks I have called twice to see when the pain in my gums will go away. I have yet to receive a call. I don't think it's normal for my gums to and bottom to hurt after root canal and filings. Also the dentist just kept commenting about my mouth being small and she didn't know how a man's hand could fit in my mouth. Which I used to have a man dentist but I switched do to moving.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Heilman and her staff are excellent. This was my first visit to have a crown reset that came loose over the weekend. They were able to accommodate me the same day. I had moved into a while back and was looking for a new dentis, but when covid happened, I got out of my regular schedule of cleanings and preventive care and put off finding a new dentist. I knew I would need additional work to remove some old fillings that were beging to fail. Dr. H identified and clearly explained what she saw as necessary to be treated. She doesn't upsell procedures, instead just gives a responsible opinion...her practice is quite busy enough. I was basically able to get everything taken care of in one day. (Crown set, teeth, cleaned, 3 fillings repaired) and get back on a maintenance schedule. The billing staff were able to access my insurance and walked through a breakdown of costs, letting me know what my out of pocket cost would be prior to any procedures being performed. Her assistants Natalie and Susan are very capable and friendly. As was the hygienist Mercedes. This is a very well run practice. They utilize state of the field technology, are well trained, friendly, and sincerely care about your comfort and doing procedures properly. Dr. Heilman is a competent, caring, talented dentist who is at the top of her game. I am very happy to have found her and her staff for my dental care.

Negative experience: Worst dental experience tonight… I’ve been going to this dental office for a few years now and every time I’ve gone, I’ve been complimented on how good I take care of my teeth. Not tonight! I received a call that someone canceled their appointment and that there was an opening tonight. I dropped everything and made a visit to the office. Right when the hygienist started cleaning my first tooth, I felt a lot of pressure from the heavy hand that was being applied and a stabbing sensation that immediately gave me the taste of blood, and the pain continued as she moved to the next and so on... I’ve never felt this kind of pain during a routine cleaning and every time the vacuum tube sucked the water out of my mouth, all I could see was a blood. When I finally couldn’t stand the pain anymore, I spoke up. Apparently it was my fault I was bleeding and inflamed. She started pointing the finger at me, saying I don’t floss good enough and she will need to teach me how. I must’ve forgotten how to floss my teeth since my last visit 6 months ago. I’ve always used a manual, soft bristle toothbrush, but I was told, I shouldn’t be, I need to buy an electric toothbrush. My gums were tore up! I can see the damage in the mirror and my top and bottom gums are throbbing in pain, causing a headache. I refused to make another appointment and will definitely not go back. I don’t appreciate them not taking accountability for their mistakes and it upset me even more that they blamed me. I will say that all of my previous experiences at this office have been great. The hygienist and dentist were the same every time in the past. This time, the staff was different and I suffered the consequences for going in tonight. I will be in search for a new dental office for my next cleaning.

Negative experience: I had the worst experience with Family Dental of Thornton in my whole dental life. I usually come just for cleaning and some fillings. But this time I had a concern about a cracked tooth. They recommended me to do a crown. I said yes and in a couple hours my tooth situation was a disaster. The temporary crown was installed very badly covering my gums, in a day I started to feel pain. In a couple more days it got worse. I came back with the complaint, they spent another hour redoing their poor dental work. Now I am on steroids because I got the inflammation from the temporary crown and bad work. But the doctor said it could be a root canal now! Completely unprofessional, total waste of time and money! I came with one problem and left with two more, plus steroids, inflammation and A BILL!
