Negative experience: Deerhaven is not what it used to be! After 25 plus years and over $175,00 from my family they have a take you or leave you attitude.,they just want money! Disrespectful office staff,money /profits over patients. Long time patients are leaving. Get everything in writing,what they tell you may not be what they actually do. Very disappointed with their practices. Im sorry I referred dozens of clients to Deerhaven!

Fantastic experience: Entire staff went above and beyond in getting my crown cemented back on after it unexpectedly came off the evening prior. My regular dentist is not local. I called at 8am and was in the dental chair within hours. I am sure this saved me from having to get a whole new crown for it being off for too long and my bite changing. Forever grateful! Friendly, quick, painless, and reasonable cost. Thank you!

Negative experience: Dr. Andrew Gutzka is the best dentist I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his patients’ health and financial situations and always tried to help me however he could. Unfortunately, my recent experience with the front office has been extremely disappointing. When I asked for my x-rays to be sent to a new dentist, the receptionist told me they could not provide them because I have an outstanding balance and I am still considered an “active” patient. I understand no new work can be done until that balance is paid. My balance exists because my insurance underestimated the cost of treatment, which created an overage. I am actively working with dental clinics and my insurance to fix the issue so I can move forward with care and avoid infection. However, by refusing to release my x-rays, they have forced me to start from scratch at a new office, which means additional time, expense, and unnecessary delays to my treatment. On top of this, when I asked for a breakdown of the billing line items compared to my estimate, I was given condescending explanations that made me feel stupid for not understanding how it worked. When I asked for costs for each upcoming appointment, I was told I would get a call back with what I should expect to pay. That call never came. Instead, I was left paying $700 at one appointment, then an additional $500 on another day, and so on, without clear communication or transparency. Patients should always have access to their records and to clear, respectful information about their care. While Dr. Gutzka himself is an excellent dentist, the way the office staff has handled billing and records has been frustrating, unprofessional, and has put unnecessary barriers in the way of my health.

Negative experience: They care…about money…not you. Never got a bill because I was displaced during covid. Paid my bill in full immediately when I found out. They still refused service because I was late paying the bill. Zero empathy and clearly more focused on profits than people. Better options out there for dental care.

Negative experience: What rude people first said didn't take insurance and asked does clarity than change it up and said not taking new patients. What is. Insurance or not taken new patients. Lies don't go far specially when it comes out of the mouth. I have one of the best dental plans in the country. Believe this is more distribing than wjat meets the eye.

Negative experience: Highly recommend reading through the 1 star reviews as they explain many of the issues well. The office is clearly focused on profit over patients. Biggest issues I faced included rescheduling of my appointment and would not provide a cleaning unless I’d also see the dentist. It was “pulling teeth” just to get the office to do a predetermination of pretreatment estimate.

Fantastic experience: I have been with Deerhaven Family Dentistry for a number of years. My most recent appointment for fillings was with Dr. Beers. He and his assistant were highly professional, made me feel at ease, performed the work flawlessly, and ensured I was comfortable throughout the process. Certainly give Deerhaven and Dr. Beers my highest recommendations.

Fantastic experience: I had an excellent experience at Deerhaven Dental! I saw Dr. Andrew Gutzka, and he was so kind, engaged, and took the time to explain every aspect of the appointment. He was very thorough during my initial visit and made sure all my questions were answered. The office was spotless, and the staff was friendly and professional, making me feel completely at ease and comfortable. I'm so happy we’ve found Deerhaven as our new dentist. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: Top quality dentists and hygienists. A bit pricey but if I have a dental problem develop, they get me right in. I’ve had dental work performed by all the dentists at this facility and they all did wonderful work on me. They spell it all out so you know your options and the consequences.

Fantastic experience: My wife and I have been going to Deerhaven Family Dentistry for years and always enjoyed the comfort and quality of care provided.

Negative experience: I've been a patient here for 7 years and now that my insurance is no longer carried i will not be coming back. The facility is great and the hygienists are great, but scheduling has been getting progressively more obnoxious. The 2x annual visits got pushed to every 9 months and then every 11 months. Today I was told that my appt was changed 10 minutes earlier than scheduled, or else I would have to come later in the day or reschedule. I was not given a great option here. Unfortuantely I am glad to be leaving this practice. Caution to new patients getting into this quagmire.

Negative experience: I have a lot to say about this place but I’ll just go with three issues that annoy me the most. The hygienists are wonderful, but the dentist they switched me to was rude (and left my tooth messed up knowing it was messed up from a filling). I’m mostly writing this because my final wisdom tooth has finally fully come in. I was told I had to have all of them removed because they weren’t going to come in correctly/were sideways. All four have come in without pain or problems. I find that quite funny. Not only did they cause no problems, but now I have a tooth to replace the one they wrongfully pulled (it was a baby tooth that had no issues, and had no adult tooth above it. I refused to get an implant so I’m still scratching my head at this one). I’d recommend them if you have no dental issues and are only going for routine cleaning. I wouldn’t recommend having any dental work done there. Was this review dramatic? Maybe. Did it need to be written? No. Do I care? Also no. Thank you and have a good day

Fantastic experience: Today I went for the first session of a new crown. Upon Dr. Merrithew examining my tooth, he suggested that only a small filling would be required, which he did within minutes after my arrival. So instead of an $1,800 bill, it only cost me just over $200. I've got to say, I am extremely impressed with this doctors honesty. I have had a number of dentists while living in Ohio and down state in Michigan who have provided horrible service and lied to me about what dental work was required. Not the case with Dr. Merrithew. He has proven that he can be trusted to provide great quality service and only do what is needed. Thank you again Dr. Merrithew for being so professional.

Negative experience: I just spoke with Rachel, she flat out refused to tell me what insurance they accept and work with ! She had No problem telling me that they don't work with Delta Dental. Are you kidding me? I definitely won't be going there. She said that she wasn't allowed to tell me. What a lazy person! I'm going to stay where I am at. That's a bunch of bull ! I'm glad I called today and found out how the receptionist are and treat new possible patients.

Fantastic experience: They always go above and beyond. Dr Gutzka was so gentle and patient with my 6yr old son when he had to have his first filling. He really eased his fears. He even took time afterwards to show him the fun stuff like how they cure the tooth fillings and use the little light that my son thought was cool Thank you for your exceptional service!

Fantastic experience: My husband and I have been a patient of Dr. Niegarth and DeerHaven for over 30 years. I have always received excellent care from Dr. Newhart, his dentist partners, dental hygienists, and front office staff!

Negative experience: UPDATING: with photo proof - there was no warning that my whole family’s appointments would be canceled the day before the due date. It seems Deerhaven continues to reinforce that is an okay way to treat their patients. Even when they pay their bills on the due date given. I have highlighted that is shows we were to pay by 5/31/24 - which we did do. On 5/30/24 a they canceled our entire family’s appointments, including for my autistic daughter who has only ever seen and been comfortable with Dr. Beers. Original: if you’re a family, do not go here. Any time that we hadn’t paid up front because they didn’t know what the charges would be, they took a year to send out the bill, and we never received anything until they threatened to send us to collections. We had no idea about a bill, and paid it as soon as we got the letter, but they still canceled EVERY appointment for our entire family after my daughter and I already had waited 6 months for our next appointment and were supposed to be coming in at the 8 month mark because they couldn’t schedule us for every 6 months due to being full, now we are all over due for our cleanings and there’s nothing they can do according to them. Appointments have been canceled so I can just make new ones - even though we are all already over due because of their lack of availability, It took me years to go to the dentist, and Dr. Beers is incredible. I finally felt comfortable going in, and I am in tears that the staff treated us this way. The office staff and the way they bill and treat their patients when they have made an error is absolutely appalling. You’ll get good care, but you’ll be treated like a criminal by office staff, even after asking multiple times to be called to make sure we’ve received the bill. You’ll be left needing care and not be able to get it even if you pay every bill, because they say they put it in the notes but then don’t call as you’ve asked. They gave me until the 31st but canceled all of our entire family’s on the 30th. When I called to pay they, they didn’t bother to mention that, just sent me a letter in the mail. Made sure to get their money and then treat us like dirt. Absolutely devastating. I work as a medical scheduler and I would absolute treat my patients like this. This happened to our family 3 times. I tried over and over again to work with them and be compassionate. We always pay our bills. Paid them thousands and thousands and over a few dollars this is how we got treated.

Fantastic experience: I always feel well taken care of at Deerhaven Family Dentistry. It starts with my welcome when I check in, to the work I’m having done (whether with my hygienist or my dentist), to the payment process and scheduling of my next appointment. I highly recommend them!

Fantastic experience: I always have a great experience here. The space is cozy and everyone is friendly. I am one of those people that basically avoided the dentist because it made me so anxious and my teeth/gums suffered for it. Shannon, the dental assistant that took care of me twice here, was nothing short of amazing. She made me laugh, gave me a pillow to hold when I was nervous, and made me so comfortable I actually looked forward to coming here again. She was a master of her craft and really took her time to make sure my teeth were nice and clean. She quite honestly made me fall in love with my smile again (cheesy, I know). Thank you Shannon, and all of the other awesome staff here.

Fantastic experience: Would recommend to family and friends! Took me a little over a month as a new patient to get in but after that they have gotten me in quickly for all my other appointments, very patient and kind!

Negative experience: Don't miss a payment or they wont ever see you again. I have given them thousands of dollars in dental work over the years. I neglected to pay an $80 bill and now they won't take me back as a patient. I am paid in full now and still no forgiveness. How sad. Must be nice to be in position where you can decide who can be your customer

Fantastic experience: Staff is kind, caring, professional and outgoing. I've never had a better experience at a dentist office. After a lengthy procedure I received a call from my dentist at 7 pm just to check on me, nobody does that anymore. Would recomend this office to anyone looking for a dentist for themselves or family.

Fantastic experience: Had a small filling done and everything from check in to check out was very smooth. I will add that the staff are very caring and there patience. I am one that needs a fair amount of numbing to be done for a procedure like this and they took the time and effort and two making sure that I was comfortable for the whole process. It did not force me into a situation where I'd have to bear through the pain of having it done!

Positive experience: We have been going to Deerhaven for many many years. Since the pandemic obviously, there’s a shortage of hygienist. We used to get in every six months, but now it’s once a year. I went in today I had not been there for a year. Shannon was lovely, but skipped testing my gums. The procedure seemed very rushed. I’m kind of disappointed.

They made sure to keep things light hearted and filled an otherwise scary visit at the dentist with laughter and that made it a pleasurable experience. Fantastic experience: Everyone was extremely pleasant. My appointment was on time with no delays. Dr. Merrithew reviewed my x-rays and performed a thorough oral examination. As a retired Pediatric Dentist , I was impressed with the quality of the procedures performed. The hygienist was very thorough and very pleasant.

Fantastic experience: Six-month cleaning and x-rays. Great visit! Love my DH, Deanna. Thorough cleaning, great discussion on multiple items of note, with great advice from her. Met with Dr. Merrithew, and have always enjoyed him over the many years I've been at Deerhaven. He made a referral back to GT Endodontics to have another look at my root canal done by them several years ago, so looking forward to that visit, as well. Fantastic experience: Awesome place for dentistry! The atmosphere is very relaxing, the people are super friendly and the docs are personable, experienced, and crazy good at what they do. I left my dentist after close to 18yrs with apprehension but the Deerhaven staff has made it well worth the move!

Fantastic experience: Thank you for an outstanding experience today! I needed to have several fillings and have had issues in the past with not being numbed thoroughly for dental procedures. Dr. Niergarth took the time to work with me and made sure I didn't feel a thing. The dental and office staff are exemplary as well. This is the first time that I've ever looked forward to going back to see the dentist! ETA: I had another filling two years later and had another fantastic experience! Dr. Niergarth even called to check on me the evening after my appointment!

Positive experience: Cozy, clean and comfortable place that is very family friendly. Only feedback I have is that they double check all new patients have the needed files transferred from the previous dentist, and make sure any necessary procedures are covered by insurance before the patient arrives for the first appointment.

Fantastic experience: For the first 45+ years of my life, I had the same dentist, but when I moved to TC, I needed to find someone new, and Deerhaven has been a great new "home". I've been pleased with the work of the hygienists and dentists and the procedure I recently had done was handled perfectly. Everyone is efficient and friendly. Their front desk staff handled the nebulous world of dental insurance wonderfully. Would absolutely recommend if you are in need of dental care.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been going to Deerhaven for years. My parents go, my husband, siblings and friends - all go here! Seriously hot spot and they do a really good job. My hygienist is amazing and I’m not sharing her name because she books out too far as it is.

Fantastic experience: I had a great experience at Deerhaven. As a first time patient, everything end-to-end was very positive. The process of discovering their office, to booking an appointment through their website, and filling out paperwork ahead of time all made the initial steps quick and efficient. I also talked to a rep on the phone about what I was looking for, and my requests were jotted down and added to my appointment. The dental assistant was thorough and pleasant, and the dentist was informative about what they would work on and the health of my teeth and gums. They did a great job showing me before and after pictures of my teeth for a clean, and fitted me for a bite guard that will help me sleep better at night. Follow up appointments were quick and efficient. All in all, a great experience from beginning to end and a model for how a dental office should run. I am a tough patient because I hate going to the dentist and getting a cleaning, as necessary as it is, but I wish all offices were like this place. Very pleased.

Fantastic experience: My parents are patients there and I was visiting Traverse City on vacation…I chipped my tooth! They were so kind to get me in as an emergency. EVERYONE was kind and professional. The office atmosphere was unlike anything I have experienced down state. ❤️ Highly recommend!!!!!!

Fantastic experience: I was called soon after I arrived. Christie was the hygienist who cleaned my teeth. She did an excellent job & explained things as she went through the cleaning process. Checkout & scheduling my next appt was done professionally & efficiently.

Negative experience: Nice staff but unable to get in for my regular cleanings. Last one was in November, they then couldn't see me till July. When my July appointment was on a day I couldn't go due to a required training at work they told me I couldn't be seen till March. Very frustrating.

Fantastic experience: Had a recent experience with Dr. Flyte for a filling. I think he's new to Deerhaven but an incredible asset! I am allergic to most commonly used local anesthetic and on top of that I usually faint when needles are used. He was empathetic, very patient, comforting and took the time to explain each step of the process. I think my filing appointment took twice as long as usual, but Dr. Flyte nor the hygienist made it seem like I was an inconvenience. Would rate them both 10/5 stars if I could!!!

Negative experience: I have been a client here for a long time. I called and spoke with the receptionist and ho was very helpful and point d me in the direction of the website to fill out. new patient paperwork. After receiving a call over two week later, I was informed they are not excepting new patients. Why could I not have been told this by the receptionist? I feel it comes down to my services required, which they didn’t see as “necessary” to them.

Fantastic experience: My family has had nothing but great experiences at Deerhaven! I recently had a dental concern and reached out on a holiday- they contacted me on the holiday to schedule me an appointment for the following day. This was so far above and beyond what I would have expected. The office staff, dental hygienists, and doctors are all fantastic. I would highly recommend Deerhaven to anyone!

Fantastic experience: Dr. Niergarth did a replacement crown and filling repair today and gave me my first truly painless shot of novocaine, turns out it just takes a little extra time but it was that level of attention to the patient experience that made dental work a pleasure today. Not to mention he offered me sunglasses and they had a wireless headphone adapter so I could listen to sweet tunes. Six stars out of five.

Negative experience: Spent over $200 for a 20 minute cleaning and referral for deep cleaning because they’re too busy here to do them, only to find out I have to pay again for an evaluation. Waste of my time and money. Just deep clean my dang teeth. Why do I have to pay for and make multiple visits? You’d think if health was the reason for dentistry they’d make it accessible for cash payers.

Fantastic experience: Deerhaven is a wonderful place! I haven’t needed any major work besides cleanings a couple times a year, but my regular visits have been done in a very kind, efficient way. Shannon especially is fantastic. She listens well to my concerns and takes notes on sensitive areas. I have tartar excess and she takes her time to remove it all and keep me comfortable. I appreciate this place!

I received a text early this week reminding me of my appointment next Monday, I had recently made plans to be out of town the entire week while forgetting about my 6 month cleaning. I called and they got me in that morning! A well run system I must say! Thank you!

Fantastic experience: When I arrived at my appointed time of 11:20, the hygienist I was scheduled with was running behind about 20 minutes. I had a lunch date at 12:15 and Shannon was kindly able to finish my appointment really quickly. I made my lunch date with no problem.

Fantastic experience: I'd let my teeth go because of such negative experiences in the past with dentists. This practice is exceptional and altered my expectations. They expect some accountability from their patients in terms of communication, payment, and promptness, but in return they're efficient, gracious, professional, and in my experience highly qualified.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Gutzga and staff gave me excellent care. Virtually no pain at all getting cavities worked on and they took the time to talk me through everything and made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. It was by far the best dental experience I've ever had. They did a fantastic job! Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: Just had teeth cleaned, so review is for hygenist. She was the most experienced (over 20 yrs), knowledgeable hygenist I ever had. Besides cleaning and inspection, she also gave good feedback and suggestions on how to take better care of my teeth. * * * * * * * 2023 Update Dr. Niergarth just replaced 2 crowns. He was very professional, listened well, addressed all my concerns, and did excellent work. He may very well be the best dentist I've ever had... which is saying alot considering I'm a senior and have seen more than a few dentists in my life. My only hope is that he does not get overwhelmed w new patients due to the high ratings, which might make it more difficult for me to get an appt. w him in the future!

Fantastic experience: Well taken care of. As a new patient to Deerhaven Family Dentistry, I was just a skosh nervous. The unknown and new everything awaited me. That nervousness quickly gave way to a sense of calm. From that moment on, the cedar log design and decor put forth an impression of comfort usually reserved for the lobby of a five-star hotel. It gets better. Lovely materials and architecture aside, the staff makes this office shine. From the first moment of walking in, I was greeted with a cheerful greeting from Savanna. As if it was second nature to her, she set forth such a positive first impression that I was assured that I was in the right place at the right time. She laid the foundation that I was welcome and belonged. Within minimal wait time, my name was called by Jen. She immediately put me at ease as we walked and genuinely talked about the casual things outside of the building like weather, snow sports and what to do with limited snow. We arrived at our destination and I found my chair and sat down. The room was clean, orderly with engaging artwork with Northern Michigan artifacts furthering the feel of being somewhere other than a dentist office. The windowed view reminded more of a nature sanctuary with the views of evergreens, wild birds at feeders and a glimpse of sunlight peeking through the White Pine bows. Jen’s high quality evaluation, taking of films and explanations of her assessments were followed by Dr. Merrithew. His relatable yet professional manner further put me at ease. He was articulate and friendly and his understanding of this new patient confirmed my evolving impression that I was indeed in the right place. Nevertheless, I was in fact due for a cleaning. Haley then took the lead with the craft and precision of a well skilled hygienist. She had my teeth back to pearly white status in under an hour! Zero pain and zero wincing and all smiles on my part. When it comes to the final stage, back to the front office to clarify billing, insurance and scheduling next visits, the same team that greeted me was just as compassionate. Kim in billing ensured me that all my previous information was in place, providing assurance and abating any uncertainty from my part. I was good to go. An attractive setting, being well taken care of, and being welcomed into their family are just a few of my reasons for attesting that Deerhaven Family Dentistry is the one of the best places to be. 100 percent satisfaction!

Fantastic experience: Is a crown always that easy? I needed a root canal and crown. Was it pleasant? No, I’m not going to sign up for it every day! But I am a needle and dentist wuss and this wasn’t very bad at all. Thank you Deerhaven.

Fantastic experience: I was greeted very professionally. They took my temp and asked 5 questions. I stood outside until my hygienist was ready for me. She had a mask on and there were air cleaners in each cubicle. I wore a mask to and from the door. I felt very safe.

Fantastic experience: We've gone here for over 30 years and wouldn't think of going anywhere else. From checking in to checking out they have an awesome staff. So caring and compassionate. The doctors always make sure you're comfortable and never in pain at any time. We've recommended this office to many, many people and everyone has been amazed with this office!!

Fantastic experience: They worked me in because part of my bridge was scraping my tongue. Glad to get it taken care of prior to holiday weekend. They got me in at appointed time even though I was a work-in. Very personable dentist and staff.

Fantastic experience: I was greeted immediately upon arriving. I was escorted into the exam room almost immediately - I appreciated this, because I was visiting the dentist on my lunch hour. The dental assistant was very friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. She listened to my story and responded with a plan of action. The doctor who saw me was seeing me because Dr. Niergarth does not work on Thursdays. He was extremely friendly, listened to me intently, and did my exam. I had absolute confidence in Dr. Beer's assessment of my emergency and appreciated his caring delivery of his "plan of action". My father was a dentist and I was pretty spoiled when it comes to going to the dentist - Dad was my dentist! But this dental office is by far the most friendly, efficient, well-run, cheerful atmosphere I have ever encountered in a dental setting. Kuddos to the doctors who established and run this practice. It is obvious that the employees are happy and the doctors are also. There is genuine joy, concern for patients, and cheerfulness in this place. That speaks volumes about the leadership. Fantastic experience: I have been going to Deerhaven since 2007. The staff are always friendly and caring. They are gentle with their dental practices and I feel relaxed when I am there, this has not always been the case at other practices. I also love the bird feeders outside of most of the windows so I can watch the birds while I’m in the chair!

Negative experience: Has to be one of the most unorganized places I have ever been. Went here once for a cleaning, went a year before wondering when my next cleaning was. Found out I was dismissed for none payment. But never received anything in the mail and no one is ever friendly here and they book a year out in advance because they have taken on so many people. Paid my bill that I never received and now im done with you..
