NVO - Reston VA

Positive experience: I had a generally positive experience during my Invisalign treatment for a cross bite, but the retainer process has been disappointing. I've been in the retainers since mid-2024 and the left side of my bite still does not quite close. Each visit they've had an orthodontist check the bite and retainer fit and make recs, and then they've scheduled me to come back in a few months' time. That's been no problem - until today. I was seen today for another check; the teeth are thankfully closer but still not quite touching, but I was only seen by who I can guess is some kind of assistant/tech (not an orthodontist) and she just said "Yeah you can kind of follow up whenever you decide you want to, but you're done," and handed me a card about lifetime retainer replacements and told me I was free to go. After the years spent here this left a sour taste in my mouth to not even be formally signed off on by an actual orthodontist, and to still not quite have the bite resolved or have any plan for potentially reintroducing elastics, or making any other adjustments at the 2 year mark. (To be clear, I never requested the follow-ups, I was told by the orthodontists that they needed to keep seeing me until this was resolved). The appointments also got harder and harder to schedule, and the level of service seems to have gone down the last 12 months. I do not want to have to have a phone call with a practice manager to receive the appropriate experience. Happy to resolve any follow up via email.

Positive experience: The office and staff are great, but do NOT get their "permanent" bottom retainer. I made the mistake of getting it for both my daughters and one broke almost immediately and then the other broke just outside of a year. I wish I would have gone somewhere else to have had that part done.

Negative experience: I have been a loyal patient at NVO Orthodontics for years and always had wonderful experiences with Dr. Itani and a few others. Because of that, I’ve recommended countless friends and family to this practice. But my most recent visit was the worst experience I’ve ever had here. The new staff, Megan and Molly, completely mishandled my care. I had fallen behind on my $175/month lifetime retention plan, and when I came in, instead of explaining options, they told me I had to pay $500 on the spot to be “reinstated” in order to have the work done that same day. I reluctantly paid, only to then be told they weren’t even doing the actual work I came in for — just making me “comfortable.” To make matters worse, both Megan and Molly were unpleasant, dismissive, and carried a careless, nonchalant attitude. Their lack of professionalism not only left me feeling taken advantage of but also pushed me out of character in a place I once trusted. It’s beyond disappointing that after years of loyalty and recommending so many people to NVO, I was treated this way. If this is how patients are now being handled, I can no longer recommend this office with the same confidence I once had.

Fantastic experience: Hayley P and Dr Robb are the BOMB!!! They always go above and beyond to make sure that we are comfortable and informed. Plus, they’re just awesome people and a pleasure to be around. Both clearly love what they do and it shines through in their work.

Fantastic experience: I've had a great experience with NVO. I started my treatment out of state at a sister company and immediately felt welcomed at this location when I moved. Each employee I've interacted with is warm and personable. I've purchased their Lifetime Retention plan after using Invisalign to correct my crowded smile.

Positive experience: Started treatment in 2020 and finished in 2022. Top notch in-office experiences with Dr. Casagrande and Dr. Robb! Happy with my new smile. However it has been a nightmare from back-office billing and post-treatment experience. I paid the full treatment up front, was promised to get refunded over time once insurance payments were received. In reality, I had to follow up several times throughout treatment (which felt like pleading for what is already mine). It seemed like a burden for them to find out where my payments were and they always eventually promised payment would be sent- which some did, but only a small fraction. I finally let it go as I was happy with the service. At the end of treatment I purchased lifetime retention for retainers. I noticed recently that this practice has expanded so much that fulfilling orders has become a nightmare. Hard to ever reach anyone over the phone during business hours, have left voicemails without any return calls. Patient notes are getting lost. I placed an order on Dec-5 and was informed that they’d arrive by Dec-25, however today is Dec-30 and still nothing. Called in today, inquiring about it and was told the order does not exist and was not placed, didn’t receive any apology. I hope the experience gets better from here, but it’s definitely not the same practice as it was just a few years ago.

Negative experience: TL;DR: My personal treatment here has been disappointing at best and rage-inducing at worst. Get a second opinion and don't trust any timelines that they advertise. I wasn't going to write a review until my treatment was completed, but this practice is quite honestly one of the most ridiculous and disappointing establishments I've had the displeasure of being treated at. First off, I went in for an initial consult and was told that Invisalign would be the best course of treatment for my specific needs. I was a bit skeptical since my teeth were in pretty rough shape, especially when I was told that it would be about an 18-month treatment period, but the people there seemed very confident and knowledgeable, and they have good reviews, so I decided to go with them. Well, fast forward 24 months (and counting!) and I'm still in treatment with no end in sight. The practice strictly relies on the Invisalign app and does not schedule regular check-ins unless they see something wrong. But that's where the problem lies, the app they use identifies the problems seemingly quickly, but the staff in the background just ignore any issues and continue on the aligner sets that you have. Well, that is, until things get so out of control that it's hard to put on aligners and your teeth are no longer tracking as they should. Only then are you brought in to get re-scanned for a new set of aligners. The process to get new aligners takes at least a month, plus the time your current aligners have not been tracking properly will add considerable amount of time to your treatment. After several times of having to go in to receive new aligners, I decided to get a second opinion to see why my teeth were having such a difficult time with Invisalign. I went to another well-regarded doctor in Reston and after an initial consult and x-rays he told me he would have never put me in Invisalign as my adjustments are too complex and time consuming. Unfortunately, I have already sunk several thousands of dollars into this treatment so it's not feasible for me to stop treatment and go somewhere else just to start again. Now I'm on my 5th or 6th time getting new aligners, and while it should be something that is easy to go in and pick up, they want to schedule a whole appointment. Usually that would be fine, but because they never have any availability at any of their locations unless you book months in advance, I'm unable to reschedule unless I want to wait another month for something that takes less than 15 minutes. This would mean that just the wait to get a new set of aligners is a month, and if you have to reschedule (as can happen) is another month. That right there is 2 months added to treatment just in wait time. I would not recommend anyone to use this practice, and if you are considering them, make sure you get a second opinion. My experience here has been extremely disappointing and frustrating.

Fantastic experience: The team at NOVA Orthdontics has been wonderful to us. The office is clean and happy, and my 12-year old son is genuinely excited for appointments. Their pricing and treatment timeline was the most reasonable out of five other practices we visited before settling on NOVA. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: We were on the fence, but then I met Eileen and Dr. Robb. Eileen made us feel so comfortable and was exceedingly patient with my many questions. Things have been overwhelming lately and I kept forgetting to figure out how to submit the online payment so they could order the appliance and we could finally get started. Eileen stayed in touch and kindly took my payment over the phone and walked me through everything needed. You know when you meet someone who loves their job and it’s just obvious? In addition to knowing how to navigate the insurance maze, Eileen is also an orthodontic clinician and I so appreciate her gentle approach. She’s particularly skilled at educating patients on the functional side of orthodontics and is passionate about how orthodontics can help people. Dr. Robb clearly loves orthodontics. We had a complicated situation but she was legit excited explaining the options and took a LOT of time walking through the details. When we came in for the installation of the first appliance, Dr. Robb was in no rush and was happy to re-explain how everything would work.

Fantastic experience: I signed up for the Smile Express plan and it was super easy. A real benefit was the Scanbox that eliminated the need to come in to the office for monitoring. I was even able to get a special correction for my lower teeth when it was determined midway through that it wasn't moving as expected at no charge. My teeth are perfect now.

They have treated all five members of my family through Invisalign aligners and braces. The entire office staff (shout outs to Dr. Barcoma, Dr. Robb, Dr. It an I, Hayley, Katelyn, Heather) is warm, knowledgeable, and accomodating. Their technical expertise is impressive, and they handled even complex orthodontic issues with competently. They have high standards and “good enough” is not enough for the NVO team; they worked with us until all issues were resolved. The office itself is a welcoming and modern. I refer to it as 'the spa' because the amenities are abundant including self-service Starbucks coffee and tea, sparkling and still water, and the loads of snacks. As someone who doesn't typically write reviews, NVO is a worthy exception. Their state-of-the-art equipment and commitment to patient satisfaction make them a top-notch orthodontic practice. Plus, the thoughtful graduation gifts – champagne and chocolate for adults and popcorn and chewy treats for the kids. Negative experience: I had an allergic reaction to the Invisalign therefore needed to stop treatment. Since I paid in advance, I was due a refund. This is where everything falls apart really quickly. I received three $2,000 bill due statement in 5 day period. No billing codes, dates served. Nothing. I had to the office three times to resolve this. The billing person is always with another client and they take your name and number stating they will call you back. Nope. As I mentioned, I'm due a partial refund and was told that it would take 4 to 6 weeks. Since I kept getting a bill due, I wanted to make sure that my refund total would remain the same. Also, it is past the 6 weeks mark. Called, left message and as of this review, still have not received a call back from billing. Yes, as a previous reviewer mentioned, you received coffee and nice reception room, but this is where the customer service stops. And for what I paid overall, I know this is part of the billing.

Negative experience: As a patient of this clinic, I have full regret in paying for their services. They claim to have only 1 insurance manager to manage >5000 patients’ insurance claims for all offices, which was ridiculous. I have waited for 7 months for get support on my files claim and NEVER heard back from them, and everytime I got in touch with them all they did was just apologizing like a robot saying it was because she had a lot to take. Having 1 person managing >5000 patients is THEIR problem, but they are making patients to eat the cost. The staff there is also very unprofessional, especially the Clinic Frontdesk and clinic manager. There is NO way to escalate your concerns in this overpriced clinic.

Fantastic experience: NVO was the last orthodontic clinic I have scheduled to get a consultation with out of like six orthodontic clinics I visited in the Northern Virginia area, and it only goes to show that I really saved the best for last. First, the Reston office (which I think is their main office) is very welcoming, with free snacks + coffee & tea stations for patients. I met Dr. Barcoma during my consultation and she explained her treatment plan with my very complicated case. I chose this practice because of her conservative approach in maintaining my teeth while at the same time try to align it. She also proved that they are the number one invisalign provider because she is the only one confident enough to ensure that we can do the whole treatment with just invisalign and not the traditional braces. I am happy that I am on a journey to a better smile with Dr. Barcoma and the whole NVO team.

Fantastic experience: Northern Virginia Orthopedics in Reston is a very spacious office. It was clean and organized with super friendly and knowledgeable staff. My only wish is that there was an office closer to my home.

Negative experience: This place has a terrible billing and communication office. They charged me the full amount for my whole treatment after the 1st appointment, but one week before the final appointment they contacted me and say there’s $500 more I need to pay. I was shocked and asked why I wasn’t told about this and that woman continued saying she was not there in my first appointment, and didn’t apologize or explain for this extra charge. Totally scam. I would never have the treatment here if they told me the full price. Yes they have a nice room and coffee machine but remember these all come from your payment and it definitely doesn’t worth it.

Fantastic experience: Northern VA Ortho Reston has been great. All the doctors are welcoming and informative. The assistant Taylor Branch helped me out today and was super friendly and easy to work with.

Negative experience: I never write reviews but I had to for this office: Simple/easy treatment, TERRIBLE customer service/response times with NO path to getting my final retainers yet. It has been almost 1.5 months of chasing them down and getting them to respond via email after multiple tries and i STILL don't have my final retainers. I am hoping writing this review will get their attention (or at the very least, help others make informed decisions when picking their orthodontist). I wanted invisalign strictly for cosmetic reasons as I've already had braces in the past. I was recommended to use Smile Express, which was their accelerated/short invisalign program. The actual treatment was simple (they do one appointment and then give you 20 trays). I asked them when I first started if I would still be able to complete treatment if I had to leave the NOVA area before 20 weeks and they said it was fine since they had multiple offices. Before I left the area, I called again to confirm I would still be able to get my final retainers and the rep said that I could use my final week's tray as a "mold" for my final retainers since I wouldn't be in Nova any longer. When I emailed again about getting my final retainers, they asked about if i went to another office to get debanded, as if I had regular braces. I told them I had invisalign so no need to be debanded (this was a little irritating to me bc they looked at my chart and got my treatment mixed up?). What followed next is 1.5 MONTHS of sending emails, them not responding, sending up follow-up emails 4-5 days later, and the cycle continues. They then told me I couldn't get final retainers without a final appointment (despite my confirmation multiple times), told me they could sign me up at a local Smile Doctors office to get the final appointment, then tell me there's no Smile Doctors office in my state, then tell me they'll reach out to their invisalign team, then haven't heard from them since. To me, it's extremely unprofessional to lure me into sign up and assure me I can complete treatment, then have me basically waste thousands of dollars bc these changes won't be permanent without permanent retainers. I am extremely frustrated with the lack of urgency in which they're operating. They don't seem to care that I won't be getting the permanent retainers since they already got my money. I would not recommend this office.

Fantastic experience: Trendy vibes. Super cool staff and doctors. Done with my 6 month invisiline journey (almost half way through) Journey was smooth with timely scheduled appointments and check up sessions. A must place to visit for consultation if you are planning for invisiline treatment. Happy smiles

Negative experience: I went in to have my retainer replaced. They took my measurements and made me a retainer. After four unreturned phone calls I finally got someone over text message and they shipped me my retainer. I then Called again and left a voicemail (which also went unreturned). At this point they have charged me $500 for a retainer that doesn’t fit and I can’t reach anyone to resolve the issue. Save your money and go somewhere else where you can actually reach someone when you have a problem because I don’t think there is anyone there who actually answers the phones. I honestly have never been this frustrated with a company and this is the first time I have ever left a review. I repeat go somewhere else there are tons of orthodontist this area and I wish I had gone somewhere else.

Fantastic experience: Fist time visiting but the appointment went very smoothly. My daughter was very nervous about the process but everyone made her feel comfortable and right at home. She was walked through the entire process.

Negative experience: I have heard wonderful things about Northern Virginia Orthodontics and have been very disappointed with my experience. I have been doing SmileExpress Invisalign with them since December. During my scans and appointments I have never seen the same person twice and, although everyone has been very kind, there have been clear gaps in communication the entire time. I was told that I would have Invisalign for 25 weeks and that my payment package would include a free retainer at the end. When my Invisalign box arrived, it came with a letter written with at least 20 blatant typos that was essentially gibberish and several things that were supposed to be in the box were missing. I went through the 25 weeks and never had a check-in appointment or even a call. At my final appointment, when I thought I would be completely finished with Invisalign, the dentist said she wanted me to do 10-15 more weeks of Invisalign, that my free retainer was a very temporary one, and that I would need to buy a more permanent retainer for nearly $1,000. None of this was mentioned at any of my initial appointments or scans. I feel very mislead and that this experience has not been professional. I would recommend going elsewhere for Invisalign. Follow up: To amend for this review, they offered a free permanent retainer, which was very kind. Nearly three months after my appointment where I was fit for the retainers, I had not heard anything or received the retainers. I called today because I thought it was strange that it was taking so long. It turns out they had them in the office, but no one had bothered to send them or reach out about it. The people at Northern Virginia Orthodontics are very nice, but they clearly have many internal issues they need to work out. It certainly shouldn’t be this difficult to have decent service.

Fantastic experience: I started my Invisalign journey with NVO in September and it’s great experience! I’m seeing changes and they are very thoughtful, appointments are easy to make and multiple locations.

Literally every member of the staff is a joy to talk to and they truly care about their patients. Positive experience: Overall positive experience with the Reston office. Only issue I had with this location occurred with scheduling a retainer pickup at the Tyson’s location. Drove all the way to Tyson’s to find out my retainer was still at the Reston office after confirming my appointment 2 weeks prior. Had to drive back to the Reston location to pick up my retainer.

Positive experience: We have been coming to NVO for a few years. My son has finished with his braces now and is onto retainers/maintenance. Service and care have been very good with NVO. The main issue we've run into in the past year is that NVO seems to have become increasingly difficult to schedule appointments with, even weeks or months out. I'm glad this wasn't an issue when we started our treatment process, but it is frustrating now.

Fantastic experience: Been coming here for almost 2 years and love it. Great treatment plan. Great waiting area for kids. Great doctors and staff, so friendly that even the kids enjoy coming.

Fantastic experience: We had a bad experience at our previous orthodontist and had to change locations for our little girl's braces care. As soon as we walked through the doors, we felt welcome and valued. Incredible care and customer service is top notch.

Negative experience: Really bad experiece with all the insurance refund. First meeting NVO assure me that the insurance will cover it. I did paid in full the treatment and 6 month after it, no one answer my phone calls or emails in NVO. Finally some one called back and told there was a misundersatinding that the insurance wont cover it. A Untrustful team make all the team look bad, what a shame.

Fantastic experience: I have had a very good experience with Northern Virginia Orthodontics. I came to correct my overbite. Doctors and nurses are highly professional and nice. Dr. Robb gave confident and satisfactory treatment. Each time my visit was well taken care of and treatment plan was adjusted accordingly. Nurses are highly professional and polite and treat patients with great respect. Among them, Ashley's sunny smile and gentle style make every visit a happy moment. The up to dated equipment and technology make NVO the best in this area. I highly recommend NVO.

Fantastic experience: NVO is absolutely wonderful! In 2009 when we moved back to the United States from 16 years living abroad our children1 elementary age, and 2 high school age needed to continue with orthodontics that for some had begun overseas. We were new to the Brambleton area and began their treatment at NVO in Brambleton. We could not have been more pleased. Years later I began my journey with Invisalign and to this day I am totally impressed with the professionalism of Dr. Casagrande and his staff. I cannot recommend them enough for orthodontic needs. 5 ⭐️’s all around!

Negative experience: We arrived about 10 minutes early for a 4:30 appointment, and we weren’t taken back until 5pm. My daughter was seen briefly by the assistant, and then left and said the doctor would be in after 2 other patients in front of us. Fast forward to 5:15, in comes the doctor. He stayed all of 3 minutes, congratulated my daughter on keeping on top of her invisiline, and we were done. We waited for about 55 minutes of our 1-hour visit. I’m definitely disappointed because for the first few visits, they were super prompt, but this time and last week (my other daughter’s appointment), the wait time is unacceptable. If they’d just told me they were running behind, or apologized for the wait, that’d have gone a long way.
